I was poking around and found this take on one of my favorite songs. This kid is absolutely phenomenal.

He also does Nightmare by A7X which blew my mind:

Here is his web page to see more.

On more of a hardcore kick today.

Criminally underrated DC band from the mid 80's, mostly because they were overshadowed by bigger bands like Fugazi and Rites of Spring. They were part of the same "Revolution Summer" movement as those bands, taking hardcore into different directions because they were unsatisfied with what they saw happening in the scene, this laid the groundwork for what would be called emotional hardcore, or emo, a term that the bands universally hated.

Gray Matter was a really interesting, inventive band. They pulled from all sorts of influences, you hear bits of what would become grunge, bits of hardcore punk, odd psychedelic passages, they even throw in some surf rock guitar on one track. The entire Take it Back EP was terrific and way ahead of its time.

That Chvrches concert didn't happen, again, but I can't be upset considering I was traveling when it happened.

Heading to a concert on Friday - The New Pornographers. I like them, but I'm not obsessed with them by any stretch, it's fairly rare that I'd see a band like them a 2nd time (I saw them in Missoula, because a band like that coming to Missoula is a must see), but hey...the tickets weren't insane, the venue is within (lengthy) walking distance, and I love the opening act.

Question posed: What was the last concert you went to where the opening act was the primary draw?

Summer of 1982. My girlfriend wanted to see Loverboy (who I loathed). Huey Lewis was opening (who I didn't loathe). So I went. Yes, that was the last time - it taught me to separate women from music. :)

Here's a different bear.

And I'm liking this song by this band Viet Cong.

Comment from Youtube: "Amazing!, sounds what Interpol will be doing in 5 years."

Finally got an answer to McLargeHuge's question. It was a few years ago when I went to see Japandroids, but stayed for the Walkmen. The Walkmen turned in a very casual, but crisp show. Ended up liking them more than I had going in.

1977 The concert was Boston than Ted Nugent opening for Black Sabbath at the Civic Arena. Boston was a no show because of weather. Nugent stole the show for me. Sabbath was great but Ted was amazing.

Showing my age. :)

Didn't know there was a new album. I'll have to get that. Ariel Pink is about as weird as they come. So, naturally I'm a fan.

Are you a Hold Steady fan?!

Never really got into Hold Steady, to be honest.

Kind of on a doom/sludge metal type kick today, probably because it's so ugly outside.

Battle of Mice is a bit of a super group, with members of Red Sparowes, Unsane and the hilariously named Made out of Babies. They were a pretty unique band, because Julie Christmas has an insane presence as a frontwoman and their songs are genuinely unsettling because of it. The lyrics are entirely adlibbed, which somehow makes it creepier.

And a band whose shirt it's no longer safe to wear in public:

^ I have ISIS on my ipod, I'll need to revisit. Do you like Nadja at all?

Here's Panda Bear's latest accompaniment to recreational drug use:

Isis' first 3 albums are probably their best, at least in my opinion, the stuff after that is pretty hit or miss.

I liked Nadja's split with A Storm of Light, I haven't delved into much of their other stuff, I should stop being lazy and get on that. A Storm of Light are pretty good as well and oddly enough have an ex member of the aforementioned Battle of Mice as well as Neurosis and Red Sparowes. I always thought Red Sparowes were pretty cool because they used a pedal steel guitar.

Another album I'm catching up to a couple of months late. I just picked this up a few days ago on record for a mere 20 bucks. Which is pretty outstanding for a double slab, even if it kind of sucks... and it doesn't. Most might be familiar with the second track on the album ("How Can You Really") but the whole thing is pretty damned good. Except maybe disc 3, which I believe is a collection of some of their earlier work. The last side featuring the Lips is pretty good, too.

Hadn't ever really listened to these guys prior to this. Heard that second track a lot on internet radio and dug it enough to check out the entire release.
