It's been awhile since we've done this. It's always fascinating to me to see the different groups and music people are listening to. Fill out the survey below and add whatever you want including videos, band sites, backstage stories, tour riders, etc.

If you don't know what tour riders are, go look up your favorite band here - some are entertaining, some are stupid.

Be nice. Contrary to what some here believe, Metal is not the only music that doesn't suck.

Concerts

Best Concert You've Ever Been To
Dinosaur Jr. at the Fillmore. seeing Merle Haggard with Kris Kristofferson and Joan Baez was pretty neat.

Last Concert You Went To
I saw Cynic at Slims. i'm not a metal person at all. interesting experience.

Worst Concert You've Ever Been To
I walked away while the Shins were playing at CMU during Carnival. lol. they weren't bad and they're actually a band a like (can anyone really hate the Shins?) but i was bored and hungry and it was an outdoor venue. think i went to go get a burrito.

Biggest Concert Disappointment
i got nothing, i don't usually shell out big bucks on concerts so i rarely have anything to gripe about.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with
Lou Reed, Mark E. Smith (the Fall), John Prine (country/folk singer, hilarious wit), Dennis González (trumpeter, seems like a warm intellectual), George Lewis (trombonist, another jazz intellectual), Leonard Cohen

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen
Fred Anderson. David S. Ware. Bill Dixon. going with guys who were alive a few years ago but aren't anymore, as opposed to guys who i'd never have had a chance to see anyways.

Styles of Music

Favorite styles
-avant-garde/free jazz
-krautrock
-old school southern soul. even Memphis might be too far North for my taste /sarcasm.
-whatever brand of americana/country-rock/folk-rock you want to claim that Dylan, Neil Young, the Band, CCR, Gram Parsons, Gene Clark fall under
-that strain of post-punk/new-wave/no-wave music that would encompass Joy Division, Talking Heads, PiL, Gang of Four, Television, Magazine, This Heat, Tuxedomoon stretching towards their current imitators (Interpol, Liars, These New Puritans, LCD Soundsystem, etc)

Styles you hate
i've never been able to get into metal.
the last rap artist i cared for was Eazy-E.
at first blush i'd say i'm not big into electronic music but i like Autechre, Caribou, Tim Hecker and drone stuff.

Bonus Coverage

Favorite Soul Singers:
Arthur Alexander
James Carr
Doris Duke
O.V. Wright
Al Green

Favorite Chopin Pianists:

Top-5 Bands/Artists Right Now
I'm doing an A-Z listening project right now, so I can't really answer this properly. I started recently and I'm only on the Bs, but the bands with the most plays on last.fm so far are:
Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian
Asphyx
Autopsy
Anthrax

First album you just thought about
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth

5 CDs on the player right now (I realize some of you have never seen a CD - please play along :)
I also have a six CD changer, which currently contains:
Jawbox - Grippe
Katatonia - Tonight's Decision
Killers (French band) - Miss aux points
Killers (UK band with Paul Di'anno of Iron Maiden fame) - Murder One
King Diamond - Fatal Portrait
Kiss - Kiss
(To make things easier on myself I just grab albums in alphabetical order off the shelves rather than painstakingly deciding what to put in.)

Last 5 Albums You Bought/Downloaded
Sauron - Thrash Assault
Barón Rojo - Volume brutal
Amebix - Arise! +2
Grinder - Nothing Is Sacred
Adam and the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier

Concerts
Concerts aren't really a big part of my musical experience. I'm a record collector at heart. Most of what I like is old, so the bands are broken up or washed up or just don't tour near me. Most of the shows I've seen have been at public festival/fair deals or friends' bands at house shows.

Styles of Music
Favorite styles
My roots are in old metal, but I love lots of stuff. I always find it hard to explain my tastes without making people listen to stuff. I find myself kind of biased towards the period of like 1975-1995 regardless of style. It's not a "That was REAL music, man," thing, it just worked out that way.

Styles you don't listen to
I don't think I really dislike any styles outright. What I don't currently listen to or know about I just consider something I might explore later. Lately I've been curious about country so I've bought stuff by The Louvin Brothers, Marty Robbins, Townes van Zandt, Gram Parsons, and The Flying Burrito Brothers recently.

Desert Island Album (you get 1 album for eternity)
Lowlife - Diminuendo. I would want to wallow in my isolation.

Bonus tracks - favorite Pittsburgh band:
Dream Death

Concerts
Best Concert You've Ever Been To
Roger Waters - September 2010 The Wall at Consol Energy Center
Nine Inch Nails - November 1994 Self Destruction Tour at the Civic Arena
U2 - August 1992 Zoo TV at Three Rivers Stadium

Sorry, after going to 77 concerts, it was just impossible to limit my "best" to a single concert, so I went with a top 3.

Last Concert You Went To
KMFDM - March 2013 at Mr. Smalls Theater

Worst Concert You've Ever Been To
Dismantled - July 2005 at Shady Brady's in Roseville, CA. The local opening acts were bad, and ran too long, and then the bar's sound system didn't work properly, so the music the headline act was playing couldn't be heard. One of the opening acts actually stopped in the middle of a song and announced, "hold on, I have to tune my guitar". Another opening act featured the "Bloodmaster 3000", and a Cookie Monster hand puppet (though not at the same time). Actually, that one was at least a bit entertaining...
When they finally went on, Dismantled attempted two songs that didn't work at all, did the third song entirely acoustically despite being an electronic band, and then the venue said it was closing time so everyone had to leave.

Biggest Concert Dissappointment
Informatik - May 2004 at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco. Fortunately the opening acts (Swarf and Inertia) still made it worth going to.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with
Either Ronan Harris of VNV Nation, or Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. They have two very different personalities, but talking to them would be interesting.

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen
Pink Floyd. I've actually seen all the members of Pink Floyd (except for Syd Barrett) perform, just not at the same time (I saw Nick Mason with Roger Waters and Richard Wright with David Gilmour).

Styles of Music
Favorite styles
EBM/Industrial/Goth/Futurepop
Grunge
Classic Rock
Psychedelic Rock
80's New Wave

Styles you don't listen to
Sturgeon's Law applies - 99% of everything is crap. On the flip side, I've yet to find a genre where I can't find at least one artist that I can enjoy listening to.
That said, my tolerance for Country may well be the lowest.

Desert Island Album (you get 1 album for eternity)
Acretongue - Strange Cargo

Random musician story:
When I was living in the SF Bay Area, I got to know a musician in the Industrial genre from CA, and was talking with him and his wife one time when it came up that his wife had painted the statues for the "Walking to the Sky" sculpture out on the Cut on CMU's campus. (She wasn't the original sculptor, just someone contracted to help with painting the piece). As a CMU alumnus, I was polite about it... at least until she pointed out how she thought it was a rather odd sculpture that seemed out of place there as well

All-Time Top Bands/Artists:

Iggy and the Stooges
James Brown
Dixie Hummingbirds

King Tubby
Al Green
Louis Armstrong
Duke Ellington
Parliament/Funkadelic/Bootsy
Sly Stone

5 CDs on the player right now:
Nigeria 70 - Various
Walk Among Us - Misfits
The Album - Fear
Expensive **** - Fela Kuti
Taking Over - Overkill

Best Concert:
Hubert Sumlin...favourite guitar player in top form, sexy Greek professor belly-dancing to the music before moving to Argentina to do it professionally. Yeah.

Last Concert:
Paul McCartney. Played a great Beatles and Wings heavy set for 3 hours, including a couple encores.

Worst Concert:
Disturbed...they were opening for Danzig, and the lead singer gets wheeled out on a Hannibal Lecter gurney. It was the corniest thing I've ever seen.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with:
Definitely Captain Beefheart...the most interesting interview I've ever read because he likes playing with words and going off on absurd tangents rather than answering questions, haha. He was a totally unique person.

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen:
Probably Howlin Wolf's band in the early '60s

Styles of Music:
I guess I lean towards funk and '40s-'50s gospel more than anything these days, but I think just about every genre has some incredible artists I really enjoy. Don't really listen to electronic dance music...I don't think much of it was made for posterity.

Desert Island Album:
Lick My Decals Off, Baby - Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band

It always resets me when the rest of contemporary music seems too normal, too humourless, and too limited in scope/ambition. I wish it would have changed the world, but nobody could really do what they did.

I've also purposely left out classical. But if I had put it in, my desert island "disc" (hey, it could fit on a data disc!) would be Beethoven's string quartets played by the Vegh Quartet, because it's the most amazing music I've ever heard.

Top-5 Bands/Artists:

Jazz:
John Coltrane
David S. Ware
Fred Anderson
Cecil Taylor
Clifford Brown or Lee Morgan, can't decide right now

You ever listen to the Die Like A Dog Quartet (Peter Brötzmann, Wiliam Parker, Hamid Drake, Toshinori Kondo)? I used to own "Little Birds Have Fast Hearts" and I really liked it.

The burrito is a harsh mistress.

Styles of Music

Favorite styles-old school southern soul. even Memphis might be too far North for my taste /sarcasm.

Since you like old-school southern soul, you might dig old-school gospel. The "hard" (ie Wilson Pickett) and "sweet" (ie Al Green) singers basically got their schtick from the contrasting leads in the old gospel quartets. I love the rich sound and energy of a small group singing together too, usually with only a bit of drum and/or guitar for accompaniment.

Not for everybody, but I love it. I started out listening to it just to delve a little deeper into the roots of rock and soul, but now I prefer it to either, even as an atheist. Weird how that works.

Favorite Blues Albums (for RPP and BlindWillieMcTell)
1928-Mississippi John Hurt-Avalon Blues (not technically an album, but the compilation is 13 songs over 38 minutes. that's pretty damn album-like)
1961-Robert Pete Williams-Free Again
1971-Hubert Sumlin-Kings of Chicago Blues, Vol. 2
1968-Magic Sam-West Side Soul
1962-Memphis Slim-All Kinds of Blues

Attaboy! Love that Robert Pete Williams. Never have a damn clue what he's singing but he's a helluva guitar player, haha.

hubert sumlin...favourite guitar player in top form, sexy greek professor belly-dancing to the music before moving to argentina to do it professionally. Yeah.

he's an amazing guitarist. his presence on those Howlin' Wolf records is indispensable. speaking of Chicago Blues guitarists i also dig Jimmy Dawkins, Luther Allison, Earl Hooker and Magic Sam.

you ever listen to the die like a dog quartet (peter brötzmann, wiliam parker, hamid drake, toshinori kondo)? I used to own "little birds have fast hearts" and i really liked it.

great band. i think i have most of their records. there's an iteration of the band with Roy Campbell Jr. in the trumpet chair and they absolutely kill. i think Campbell is one of the most underrated trumpeters of this generation. basically any album with a rhythm section of William Parker and Hamid Drake is self-recommending.

since you like old-school southern soul, you might dig old-school gospel. The "hard" (ie wilson pickett) and "sweet" (ie al green) singers basically got their schtick from the contrasting leads in the old gospel quartets. excellent stuff. as a heathen it doesn't completely speak to me, but the intensity carries the day.

love the Wicked Pickett. have you ever heard his take on 'Hey Jude' with Duane Allman on guitar? he sings the hell out of that song.

attaboy! Love that robert pete williams. Never have a damn clue what he's singing but he's a helluva guitar player, haha.

i'd love to see your list of 'top/favorite' blues albums.

I am curious Syrinx - was your handle inspired by mythology, biology, or Hamilton?

It's stolen from that...I just liked the sound of it and they are one of my favorite bands.

BTW - I love reading this stuff. I'll get to my own answers after I've had the chance to pour through some more youtubes of bands you all have mentioned that I'm not familiar with. ;)

I've also purposely left out classical. But if I had put it in, my desert island "disc" (hey, it could fit on a data disc!) would be Beethoven's string quartets played by the Vegh Quartet, because it's the most amazing music I've ever heard.
Obviously a piano piece, but Moonlight Sonata may be one of the greatest pieces of music in the history of music.

All of my favorite artists are still putting out albums, but for newer bands, I don't mind Muse and The Black Keys

First album you just thought about
Tom Petty & THB upcoming album

Best Concert You've Ever Been To
My 2nd Tom Petty concert in 2010 at the Pavilion. Had about 20 friends there, just a very fun day.
HM to Hall and Oates at Stage AE (again because I went with a large group) and The Temptations and Four Tops at the Benedum (just a very fun show)

Last Concert You Went To
Tom Petty @ Consol in June

Worst Concert You've Ever Been To
Can't say I've ever had a concert I've ever regretted attending

Biggest Concert Dissappointment
Tom Petty @ Consol in June. Still put on a great show and I had a great time, but it was the first time I've seen them in an arena and the atmosphere wasn't anywhere close to an outdoor show.

Artist you'd most like to meet/drink with
Jack White. Look up his hour long interview with Conan O'brien on youtube, just a very well spoken and interesting guy.

Band that you'd love to see in concert but it can never happen
Elliott Smith

Just really love good song writing no matter the style, if you listen to the top songs I listed they all tell great stories. I listen to everything from Rock to Country to Motown to Folk, whatever fits my mood.

Styles you don't listen to
I'll give anything a chance but haven't really found anything I like techno-wise, and most rap
