I think Tomlin is very intelligent. He brings in sheep coordinators because he knows he will never be challenged, and they will never be able to take his job. When things go well, Tomlin had his hands in everything. When they go poorly, he has a fall guy. It's brilliant. When he fires coordinators, he's actually firing himself.
He's like the guy at work that will spend 3 hours trying to avoid doing 10min of actual work. Just do your job, bud. Hire a couple of competent coordinators. It will make your life so much easier.

I don't think this team is in a rebuild at all. The defense needs a NT and a CB and it should be top 5. Hell, it should be at least top 10 now, but yeah...

I'm with you. This roster has talent. It's by no stretch of the imagination perfect, but with how this team is set up right now, if the offense can put up 21 points in a game, the defense should be able to win the team the game. They aren't even coming close.

Yep, hiring cronies to be his fall guy is a massive issue.

After Butler left, he was basically like, dude I’m a crony, ask Mike.

I give Belichick credit - he hires and develops really awesome coordinators. I think where his coordinators fail as HC is that they try to be Bill, and that's just not possible anywhere else outside of New England.

The greatest thing ever was when Ike Taylor said something along the lines of Tomlin being a "Football Jesus" and if anyone didn't think Ike was an idiot before, you knew he was an idiot after that.

I just think it’s fair to question how a guy dubbed as a ‘defensive genius’ continues to get blown out in the playoffs.

This season the D has been borderline shitty, and Tomlin himself told us it should be a dominant D.

They are the highest paid D in the league and were completely healthy Sunday.

I expect a D being paid that much, with a defensive uh… wizard… to make that final stop in Q 4.

It was only 27-23 with 9 mins left when the Bengals took over at their own 7.

93 yards later the game is over.

This team struggles to score, so when they hit 30 it’s more than reasonable to expect a win.

In fact, the last three times they have scored 30+ they have lost.

Defensive wizard!

.

Bill just knows what he is looking for and holds everyone around him accountable though and that is the difference.

I get it from the standpoint that Rooney won't fire Tomlin so this is the best option.

So Canada will be the fire and fall guy.

But who replaces him? The high school coach who helped his wife find a job? The car salesman who got him a really good deal on his cool new car?

If we end up with a top 5 pick, you look at trading down and piling up picks. If we're 8-15, you take BPA of OL/DB/LB.

Keep the 2nds, you have a better chance at getting an impact player with multiple picks.

Yes, and the organization would be fine with those hires, sadly.

This is again why Steeler fans are in a tricky spot.

You want to see KP have some success and win a few games, maybe lead a comeback here or there and show he can do that shit.

But unless this org crashes hard they will keep living the delusional life.

Tomlin’s never had a losing season! He’s a great coach, shouldn’t change a thing!

Ultimately I fear they will blame it all on KP, and Tomlin had to break in this rookie QB, robble robble robble.

Rooney seems to fear facing the truth and stays in his safe place with the status quo.

Rest assured - Tomlin will get a free pass for this season. The narrative will switch to he’s only had one losing season in x years!

I’m not even convinced Canada will be let go since he still has a year left on his contract. The Steelers typically “fire” coaches by not re-signing them.

Ya Canada is a little too young to “retire”.

I can’t even remember the last coordinator they officially fired without making up BS.

Haley?

It’s pretty bizarre they won’t outright fire them.

Is it cheapness on part of Rooney why they never fire anyone? Is it because they are still stuck in the 1970s?

Looking back on it. Only a few times since Bill Cowher became head coach, have the Steelers hired a coordinator, aka offensive or defensive, that was outside the organization and had no history with the organization or was already with the organization.

  • Cowher in 1992 hired Dom Capers from the Saints, he was the defensive backs coach, and he hired Ron Earhardt from the Giants, he was an offensive coach.
  • Haslett came from the Saints in 1997 and became the DC. He is from Pittsburgh
  • Ray Sherman came from the Vikings in 1998 and became the OC (Only made it one season)
  • Kevin Gilbride was fired as the head coach of the Chargers in 1998 and the Steelers hired him as OC in 1999. (Made it two seasons)
  • Todd Haley was hired as the OC in 2012 after being fired as the coach of the Chiefs. But we all know his history with his father being a coach for Noll. So technically he did not have any history, but his family did.

Really, other than the late 90's chaos with the OC, they don't hire outside of the organization or someone they don't already know, aka Lebeau in 2004.

Now, before people fly off the handle about this. I need to investigate other long term coaches to see if they do it differently. We know Belichek does not as he continually just hires back the guys who went off and failed miserably at being head coaches. Plus also hired two of his sons who basically never played football even at the college level or even high school level. Both played Lacrosse.

Tomlin will always be a guy that fell into the perfect situation - had a ready made championship team with a future HOF QB, and two top end coordinators, and a team chocked full of leaders.

As he’s run the org into the ground and made it into a running joke, his great fortunate also includes being hired by the only org that doesn’t believe in firing coaches.

It is what it is and is frustrating as hell for those of us who don’t have our heads buried in the sand.

Again, we just have to hope he keeps getting exposed and has most of his power stripped away.

Dude put up with Gronk and a f***ing crazy murdering TE....

He would have won more than ZERO championships with those three.
A competent coach could have done amazing things with Ben, Bell, and Brown. This franchise pissed away the last decade plus with this fraud as a coach. It’s disturbing that people still defend this moron. How are some people just now seeing he’s an idiot?

He and Art ruined this team.

Off-topic, but I was watching some highlights of the sunday night game I didn't catch and noticed that Herbert's long td to Palmer was practically the exact same play as Kenny's first throw of the season that bounced off Claypool for an int.

Same exact spot at midfield, conceptually they're identical, though out of slightly different formations.

Motion before the snap into a rpo fake handoff to the left with the line driving towards the sideline, which drags the initial defensive rush away from where both qb's end up shifting over to waiting for the deep route to develop. Both plays succeeded in giving the qb's a lot of room and time post snap.

Two different results due to slightly better coverage on Claypool and an obviously better thrown ball by Herbert leading the receiver compared to Kenny's underthrow.

But the play design pretty much worked as intended, so it's odd that I don't think I've noticed them draw up anything half this creative since that first play post qb switch. Clearly Canada has plays like this that actually create time and space for the qb and receivers, use them. It was a great call, just poorly executed.

Unironically they should listen to some of the advice Ben's been saying on his podcast about taking more deep shots. They should be calling plays like this early and often, what do they have to lose at this point? At bare minimum it threatens the secondary enough to back off from the line which would aid the running game, which then aids the passing game and gives Kenny more opportunities to develop his downfield reads and accuracy.

Like I have said before, the goal for this offense should be 21. If they can score 21, this defense should be able to win us the game.

In this thread or in general? I don't think anyones opinion here changed recently. Those that are pro Tomlin are dying on that hill.

todd's father never was a coach. he was more scouting / player personal.
he drafted the players, noll taught them.
