I mean wouldn't it be worse if the Sixers were like "Sounds good. We want you gone" and the Clippers were like "nah bro, we good."
At least in that case, the fail state might be the Sixers just cutting him. Now he wants out, we won't send him anywhere, and the one team we foisted people off on refused to consider taking him.

So with the Bird rights..... the Celtics were at the cap and needed to resign bird, I assume? The league made it up so he wouldn’t leave Boston?

It's actually an urban legend because while Larry Bird was the first major star to sign a new deal after the new CBA was agreed to in 1983, when he signed his contract the new CBA wasn't even in effect until the following year (beginning with the league year in July 1 of 1984)

Somehow it got tied into him, maybe because of the CBA negotiations/stories using him as an example... Even though Boston didn't actually use 'Bird Rights' to re-sign him, because it was the summer before "Bird rights" (originally called something like qualifying veteran exception) even went into effect.

Basically correct, although there was a lot more to it. There wasn’t a cap in the NBA except for one year in the 40s. It was agreed to in ‘83 for implementation in ‘84-85. No matter what the number was, it would have meant blowing up the Celtics the following year because Bird was a free agent after ‘83. So the timeline isn’t perfect, but the league looked forward and saw what was coming soon.

That's such crap lol but on the other hand it would be a brutal look for the NBA execs to be the ones to disband the premier franchise, so I do get it

At that time, the entire league was built around Magic vs Bird.

The league didn't hit a significant popularity surge until 1979. That was triggered by Bird and Magic entering the league together after playing each other in the NCAA Finals.

If you think about it going into the summer of 1983.

Larry Bird was 26 and about to become a FA after his rookie contract
Robert Parrish was 29 and still one of the best centers in the league
Kevin McHale was 25 and about to be an RFA (the Knicks signed him to a deal which the Celtics matched)
Danny Ainge was 23 and about to be a FA in like 2 more seasons.

So had there been no 'exception' to going over the cap the Celtics never would have been hard pressed to have Bird, Parrish, McHale and then still fit Danny Ainge in when he became a FA.

Kenyon Martin Jr is exactly the type of player this team needs. A player who looks to finish a drive to the bucket with a dunk rather than a pass or drawing a foul

Oh I know. Like I said I totally get it, it's just funny when it's laid out that way especially being used to today's landscape with multiple star studded teams.

In other words, it's crazy to imagine any league literally being propped up by a player, rivalry, etc. To be in a spot that precarious is unbelievable. Imagine the pressure those execs must have felt knowing this issue was on the horizon

Never fails to make me shoot a little air through my nose.

I think it's Oubre, but I'm excited to see some wacky lineups over the next few weeks. I hope they keep trying things out.
Nurse in not so many words said Springer was part of his rotation around the start of the season right? I can't imagine he's in any danger...I hope?

I too am looking forward to some crazy combos. At least they have some athletes to choose from now

Oubre would be the obvious choice but I wouldn't be surprised if they want to keep him coming off the bench. Not sure I would disagree with that either since without him there isn't a lot of bench scoring to look forward to.

I'd kind of like to see Batum get some run. He's one of those guys that you never really think about until you see him play and then you go, "that guy's pretty good". Not sure what he's got left but he averaged just under 22 min per game last year (more than RoCo) so he may have something left.
