Olympics:

Played in the winter when players are in form (better hockey).

Doesn't compete with the most popular sports for TV time.

Teams aren't knocked out so fast. They have a better chance.

No gimmicky teams with players that can play their own Country. I don't mind Team Europe because it consists of players from counties not in the Tourney.

No exhibition games which spoil the lead up to the Tournament games.

The World Cup feels like a quick cash-in and something that will never really take off unless it follows a similar format (or something even better) and is played during a similar time of the year as the Olympics.

I love the Olympics and I think there is a place for the World Cup in between the Olympics, but not like how it's currently setup. Work needs to be done to make it better.

Kind of prefer the World Cup group stage. It's like the FIFA version where every game matters.

The World Cup has so many more teams they're kind of forced to do it that way. Plus they had qualifications which is an extension to the World Cup.

Both have their positives. The Olympic tournament with NHL participation is obviously better than this tournament due to the gimmick teams and the roster restrictions. The Olympic tournament without NHL participation is pointless. The World Cup with solely unrestricted national teams would probably be better than the Olympic tournament even with NHLers.

I expected this as soon as America was eliminated. I planned to do a "Wheel of excuses" with "World cup isn't even a real tournament anyway" and "We didn't ice our best possible roster" and "Canadian Refs".

Well, Team USA just got embarrassed and as an American I don't feel the slightest bit affected by it, so there's that.

I dont blame ya, However the moment you saw Tortorella as the coach you probably lost most if not all interest/hope. The roster selection would have been my complete check out point.

The Olympics had 5 solid hockey tournaments between 1998 and 2014. Unfortunately, the IOC's ever-expanding greed has once again put future NHL participation in to question. I would not blame the NHL for passing on future Olympics and focusing on adjusting the World Cup format to gain broader fan support around the world.

The Olympics are the Olympics. You are a part of a much bigger and historical thing than the irregular World Cup of Hockey. I much prefer when it was called Canada Cup and that it's intention was not to try and replace something else.

This tournament is an attempt to create leverage against the Olympics, so that it keeps paying for the NHL to shut down for a few weeks. Other than the risk of injury factor, I'm guessing the owners don't mind NHL players at the Olympics as a concept, and of course the players want to do it, but it's tough to take all the risk, and pay for the privilege of taking all the risk, which is what the NHL would be doing if the Olympics(or whatever) don't cover the costs of NHL participation.

That's why it feels like a quick cash-in. They have to figure out this Olympic thing out. Not today, but sooner rather than later. So the NHL and NHLPA put on this tournament to get a bargaining chip of some sort. Which is also why we got the two non-specific teams; to get more NHLPA members into the games.

The Olympics and World Championships are the real deal of course but hockey these days is boring and low on quality. This joke of a cash grab is completely useless though.

It was called the Canada Cup when NHL players weren't playing in the Olympics. It was the Canada Cup when the Soviets were a mysterious and mythical group of soldiers on ice that played in perfect unison and weren't allowed to play in the NHL. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale.

The hockey being played during the Olympics isn't that much different from what we've seen so far in the WCoH, IMO

I disagree 100%.

The world cup is better hockey.
Its actually best-on-best competition.
It doesn't disrupt the NHL season - it's actually going to improve the NHL season.

I love the WCH and hope we see it continue. People will soon forget about olympic hockey, which is a diluted talent pool and not as entertaining.

I think the mismanaged 2022 Winter Olympics bid process was very sobering for the NHL/NHLPA when it comes to the future of their arrangement with the IIHF & IOC. The IOC had every preferred host site drop out of the bid process because of the unreasonable demands they placed on potential host cities. I imagine the NHL does not want to commit to the Olympics long-term when it appears the IOC can only attract totalitarian regimes as they are the only nations willing to foot the enormous expenses required of hosts.

The game is more exciting than it was in Sochi.

Now if they could fix... Ehhhh.... Issues...

Considering each team cannot select the best from its region, this isn't best on best. Which is one reason why Olympic tournametns with NHL participation are superior.

I agree that the game is much more exciting - what issues are you referring to?

The Seven Nation Army, for starters.
The Impossibility for some Teams to select their best players is also a non-negligible issue.

wc is just a pre-preseason tourney that makes the nhl some $. the olympics are not much better. id rather watch game 19 of the regular season than either one. and id rather watch jr and college kids in olympics than the pros.

I am enjoying it thoroughly. I think the hockey is great and the players are very into it. I for one would like a return to when the Olympics were for amateurs. I dislike Olympic basketball because it is pretty much a given the US will win. I also am not a fan of Olympic Hockey for the reason it breaks up the season too much.

I thought this was gonna be special but it was great for one game. One Game! In one game Can-US it had more intensity than all the former Olympics combined. But it stopped. Almost as if they were told to stop it, it was too much. They do this in the new NHL. Since it's a NHL-controled tourney, they sucked the life out of it. They are good at that.

This is amazing hockey, Olympics is amazing hockey, let's enjoy the game instead of criticizing what has been a great tournament.
