Almost 45% of the season will be over after our game with the Panthers, and our schedule gets a lot more difficult after that. I think we need to win 4 out of our next 5 to have any shot at the playoffs. If we can't have a good stretch here, I think I'll be on board for the tank train because a 10th place finish would just be typical.

Not quite good enough to make a solid run, not bad enough to put ourselves firmly in good draft position/fire ruff  trolls

The next 5 games should decide the fate of this team. If they roll off anything less than 3-2, it's time to call the season a loss, imo.

The idea of getting MacKinnon for a half season of suckiness is the big motivating drive for me right now.

Ennis - MacKinnon - Foligno would be fun to watch, I think.

I'd be ecstatic with getting a top 3 pick. MacKinnon - Jones - Drouin all seem like they could be #1 picks.

Unfortunately, I think there's just too many teams in the East that are just as bad as we are.

ISS now has Nichushkin #2 behind Jones and Darnell Nurse at #5. Barkov's now listed #7. Getting just a top 5 pick this year would be huge as there will absolutely be seriously good players still available, so long as you pick the right one. Not holding my breath on it happening, though with the new system if you finish 9th in the conference you have a very tiny chance at getting even the #1 overall.

Honestly, if this team ends up picking anywhere in the top 10, I think we'll get a fantastic player. After those 3 you still have Monahan, Barkov, Lindholm, Pulock, Nichushkin, Ristolainen, Nurse, Erne...

If we're gonna bottom out any year, this seems like a good one to do it. There's great talent at the top of the draft, and the season is nice and short so there won't be as many months of suffering while we watch this team suck.

Seriously, the fate of this team was decided when Roy was traded and not replaced.

And laughably, when Ruff was retained as head coach.........

This is a great point that is not discussed a lot on here.

Over the summer we all thought the Roy deal was a nice appetizer, were excited at the time, and were waiting for more.

The more part never came...and we are seeing the result of that now.

I suppose this is all part of the brilliance of Darcy Regier. His genius will be revealed in the fullness of time.

:sarcasm:

It does really seem like the perfect season to suck, the problem is making sure we suck enough to be at the bottom

;): 2.18 – Next five games could tell Sabres’ story (Allan Muir – Sports Illustrated)
Fair to say then that the next five games will reveal everything we need to know about this team. Five winnable games: the Jets and Islanders at home, the Leafs, Lightning and Panthers on the road.

Come out of this 4-1, maybe even 3-2, and this group buys itself time to look inside the room for the answers that should be there.

Anything less, and even Terry Pegula should understand that something has to change.

And don’t bother looking for the easy way this time.

Most games look like we can win them:
so 0-5 is my prediction, but I can see us winning vs Tampa as they are the best chance for a loss.

Winnipeg gave us good games last year with but most were losses.
Leafs - They seem to bring it vs us.
Islanders - give us fits at home lately. Plus first game of the year for me, so I mark it down as a loss.
Lightning - A much more skilled team vs Buffalo calls for a poor outing, as the lively Buffalo crowd in Tampa scares the Sabres as they are not used to being cheered for from a loud crowd.
Florida - They are just like the leafs and outside a few OT games, we have done horrible down there.
