The New York Rangers won a trip to Stanley Cup Finals by besting the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, cementing a return to prominence after a failure to qualify for the big show in the 2009-2010 season. Despite a series of ups and downs including multiple failed dances with overpriced players, the Rangers find themselves in the enviable position of taking the final step toward the ultimate prize, and knocked two division foes from the tournament to get there. The Rangers’ missteps over the last several years have been many and they have been grave, and General Manager Glen Sather has justifiably taken an immense amount of abuse for them. However, credit must be given where it is due: this run is Sather’s doing.

Undo the Nash trade and I don't have any huge complaints about him. Can't even complain about Gomez because of what it ended up getting us.

Which is kind of odd, considering how much of a trade wizard he is compared to a free agency kind of guy.

Not saying the Nash trade was bad, per se, but me and maybe three other people on these boards were outright against it before it happened. Me mainly because Dubi was my favorite ranger and I had a "don't fix what isn't broken" mentality.

But I digress

He caught more flak than was needed around HF recently but the guy still sucks overall and the praise for 1 single cup finals appearance is getting ridiculous. He's not a rookie GM 5 years in he should have reached this point years ago

I was just looking back rumors from around the time of the Nash trade. Bobby Ryan was another popular rumor, and a type of offer considered fair for Bobby Ryan included Dubinsky + Erixon + Thomas + 1st. My brother and I were both hoping we'd lose out on Nash to pursue Ryan.

In retrospect, easily would've done that deal. Assuming we still had Richards, still went after MSL, and still traded Gabby, we'd currently have something like:

Kreider - Stepan - Ryan
Hagelin - Richards - MSL
Anisimov - Brassard - MZA
Boyle - Moore - Dorsett

McD - G
Staal - Stralman
Moore - Klein

We'd still have a thirty-goal scorer and would have retained Anisimov. If Richards were to be bought out, as is the likely case, we'd have a guy who would likely would be capable of stepping into the role between Hags and MSL and more cap space. It would just be a matter of finding a 3LW (i.e. a Pouliot). We'd be golden cap-wise heading into next year (~2 million free assuming a $69 mil cap).

But who knows. DZ might've had a better season, Sauer might not have been hurt the year before, Gabby might not have been moved, and we would've kept Callahan, having everything end up differently. Still, retrospect can be fun (and a bit of a ****).

Overall--there are worse GMs than Sather, but there are also better ones.

A guy who tries all the time and has some failures (Sather) is going to get more flak than someone who sits on their hands and does nothing (Snow).

I'm happy for Sather. Two whole off days in Los Angeles with nothing to do except take a few hours to figure out what golf course to play at, go to dinner, watch some TV, and basically relax. Must be nice.

Not sure what you're basing your Snow comment on. Garth Snow has done a lot - wrong. Thomas Vanek, Goalie 2021, the list goes on.

I got a kick out of the story that he never watched McDonagh play before he pulled the trigger on the Gomez trade.

he gets the credit for this run.

STILL want him gone for the previous joke he's played on the franchise for the prior 13 years.

He's pretty much acknowledged what we all know. He doesn't pay attention to the game and allows his underlings to make the decisions.

He's getting credit for other people's work.

The Rangers are going to lose bright people becuase this wind bag can't call it a day.

Snow amazes me

Somehow he turned Moulson next years 1st a 2nd and a 7th into Sebastian Collberg and a second

It's just...wow

I would laugh my ass off if that pick turns into McDavid

Snow compounded two massive mistakes:
-He overpaid badly for Vanek, especially when you consider that all the rumblings have been that his preferred UFA destination is Minnesota. Vanek was not worth Moulson, a 1st, and 2nd.
-He panic-sold Vanek. A busting former 1st round pick in Collberg and a 2nd is terrible value for Vanek. For that return, they should have taken the chance Vanek would walk and go all out to re-sign him. At least then you could say they gambled and lost.
