If they are, then the value was established. What the Leafs did was really, really smart. They are, but what the Leafs did was highly, highly unconventional.

Agreed with that. That doesn't make any sense that the 1st place team's coach doesn't have a single vote. The point isn't that Sutter doesn't deserve recognition. It's more that Keefe doesn't have a single vote.
This wasn't a month ago when the Leafs struggled. This was 2 days ago this article came out.
I don't really care if you despise the Leafs, but come on... come on. Paul freaking Maurice has votes. Gerard Gallant has votes. Brad Larsen.... LINDY RUFF. Keefe? Nope.
Look at this:
Voting totals (points awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1- basis): Rod Brind'Amour, Carolina Hurricanes 63 points (10 first-place votes); Darryl Sutter, Calgary Flames, 52 (two); Dallas Eakins, Anaheim Ducks, 42 (four); Gerard Gallant, New York Rangers, 22; Dave Tippett, Edmonton Oilers, 20; Dean Evason, Minnesota Wild, 14; Peter Laviolette, Washington Capitals, 13 (one); Brad Larsen, Columbus Blue Jackets, 9; Jon Cooper, Tampa Bay Lightning, 6; Paul Maurice, Winnipeg Jets, 4; Lindy Ruff, New Jersey Devils, 3; Andrew Brunette, Florida Panthers, 3; Jeff Blashill, Detroit Red Wings, 2; Mike Sullivan, Pittsburgh Penguins, 1; Todd McLellan, Los Angeles Kings, 1
Maybe the thought is they’re just meeting expectations?Agreed with that. That doesn't make any sense that the 1st place team's coach doesn't have a single vote.
Thats why I dont believe Keefe deserves the award over Sutter but the fact that the first place coach doesn't have any votes over a bunch of the others that SprDaVE listed is a bit puzzling.Maybe the thought is they’re just meeting expectations?

Yeah I don't know just speculating. I'm not even sure what the criteria is or when the vote was taken or who votes for that matter.Thats why I dont believe Keefe deserves the award over Sutter but the fact that the first place coach doesn't have any votes over a bunch of the others that SprDaVE listed is a bit puzzling.
if that were the case brind’amour wouldn’t be top 3 though
For sure he should have some votes. Looking at the standings I would say that NYR, Minnesota and Calgary are the biggest surprises.More often than not, I'd expect the Coach Of The Year to go the bench boss of a team that has improved the most from one season to the next. That said, for Keefe to not have any votes is a stretch to an unbelievable degree.
Pfft no. It's all about expectations. The collection of talent he helped assemble, then later inherited, and has since kept and augmented was the best ever, destined to go 82-0 for multiple years before he screwed it up.I'm sure they'd all have Dubas leading the GM of the Year race, then.

Isn’t the GM of the year award basically whatever team does good in the playoffs?
I was always led to believe that it was a meaningless award that no one cares about. Guess times have changed.Isn’t the GM of the year award basically whatever team does good in the playoffs?

Probably to see how the deadline moves a GM makes works out.Yeah, GM voting takes place after round 2 I believe, which is odd considering the Jack Adam’s is voted on before the playoffs even start. Why the delay I’ll never know.
Matthews Calder?Any award that involves voting is relatively meaningless.
Matthews Calder?
Not sure that's a popular opinion. Not many legitimate awards left if you remove voting.Sure? Nice to have but relatively meaningless. Look at Norris voting, GM voting etc.

The bolded is how I would vote. Could be why Dubas never received any votes, he doesn't seem like he'd have many stories.People care about it, but it is next to meaningless. What's it based on?
Best single season result relative to expectation?
Best tactical moves, regardless of outcome?
Best results from tactical moves?
Best moves as judged to benefit to the team moving forward from the date moving forward?
Best overall body of work from the last 3 seasons?
Most respected?
Best cocktail hour stories at annual GM conference and draft?
Matthews Calder?
