Was a beauty. Wish he was still here. He’d be perfect for the team identity they are trying to build but hey 2 late rounds picks that likely amount to nothing are worth it.
Good thing they got two 1st rounders and not two late round picks.

Wasn’t intended to be a zinger. But for you to say first rounders will likely turn into nothing is plain silly.
Yeah that's a silly statement.

It'd be true if Mark Kelley and Stanley were still around.

Mike Doneghey has us covered.

In the 20-30 range? Yes they are. Just go back and look. Yeah you might get 1 gem out of 20.

It doesn't matter if we kept Hagel.

His biggest asset right now is his cap hit and that has little impact on this Hawks team. If we kept him, he'd be making 5m (ish) per season by the time it'd matter, and he wouldn't be as loved because of it.

Be happy with 2 firsts and Raddysh (Boris is also a player that exists).

Cup teams have guys like Hagel making that money. It’s a weird excuse

We’re at least 5 years away from being a cup team. So what‘s the point of keeping him? He‘s not a part of the timeline for the Hawks future.

Also this draft is much akin to the 2015 draft, so a good year to have a late first.

He’s the prototype player for the team you are trying to build? Listen I’ll admit I’m wrong if the draft picks come to fruition I just hated the trade from the day it was rumored. Hagel was one of my favorite players and I think he would have done more good here than what we got in return. That’s it.

But this proves that there are good players in the late 1st round.

Jordan Eberle and John Carlsson
Marcus Johansson and Kyle Palmieri
Kevin Hayes, Evgeni Kuzenetsov, Charlie Coyle
Phillip Danault and Rickard Rakell
Brady Skjei and Tanner Pearson
Anthony Mantha, Andrei Burakovsky, Shea Theodore, and Ryan Hartman
Nick Schmaltz, Robby Fabbri, and David Pastrnak
Joel Eriksson Ek, Ilya Samsonov, Brock Boeser, Travis Konecny, Jack Roslovic, and Anthony Beauvillier
Tage Thompson
Robert Thomas, Filip Chytil, and Jake Oettinger

...did you think that was supposed to help your case?

Yep. Also K’andre Miller, Sandin, and Alexeyev the next year. Plus Romanov was taken early 2nd and was flipped for the pick that became Nazar. What a self-own.

I never said you can't find good players I said most won't make it. But I guess the list of roughly 25% of players who did proves me otherwise. Most of which are nothing to write home about.

Pretty sure you just proved there are plenty of good players in the late first round. Lol.

Tell me you know nothing about drafting without telling me you know nothing about drafting.

Most are better than Hagel.

I love exploring this further. Even our own recent picks in the 20+ range since 2010 include Rinzel (looks promising), Nolan Allan (heading to WJC), Beaudin (not great), Jokiharju, Alex Friggin' Debrincat, Nick Schmaltz, Hartman, Danault, and Kevin Hayes. We haven't actually been all that horrible at this, which is shocking.

Bowman said as much...he admitted to having traded or ‘lost’...as in Hayes...those ‘next players’ in trades to continue a culture of winning now, it cost us the future...

Would hate this guy on the team.

I was one of the biggest early Hagel fans, from saying look in Rockford that he deserved way more praise than Kurashev.

But no I don't want him on this team. Especially not for the good value he got, but because this team should be as bad as possible. It's bizarre how so many posts ignore the value is in the tank to trade him, plus others.

To complain about late 1sts. Which could still be a mid 1st if the Lighting lose round 1. But ignore the goal of this and next year, at least, is to get 1-3 picks in the draft. Having good players like Hagel puts it more likely to 5-10 range. So where is the better value there?
