Seeing Marner just absolutely be a non factor was digusting for what he’s gonna demand in the off season.

Just puts things into perspective when you see how useless he is and then you see Pettersson who’s been about 10 times worse and is softer.

Watching tonights game makes me want to strongly believe that I’d rather have a 60-70 point in your face, high energy, north-south player than a Marner/Pettersson.

So assuming Pettersson has a degenerative knee issue that isn't treatable but can only be managed, does anyone think this guy is suddenly going to discover the mental fortitude over the summer to actually play through it? I have to say I'm highly skeptical. I'm leaning towards pulling the chute on that contract and making the best of it.
You do know that playing through pain in the NHL means taking pain killers right?

That no look backhand turnover by Marner that lead to the ENG was infuriating to watch. Usually I'm cool with seeing some creativity even if the end result isn't ideal, but that was brain dead.

Why do we just look like the Canucks playing Tocchet hockey?

Dump and chase, fail to get/maintain possession. Low quality point shots.
A lack of moral fortitude.

With defensive systems clogging the slot (you young whippersnappers would call it the house, just like you call goal sucking seagulling, (jfc I cannot stand those newfangled bs namby pamby terms you millenials come up with when you aren't too busy trying to figure out how velcro shoe closures work), the points are under little pressure, and gutless forwards - who don't have the psychological balls to drive through the slot and make passes into the slot - just bail on every play by passing (not dishing, there is no effing tableware on the ice, you don't dish a puck you pass the damn thing) back to the point.

It all makes me want to puke

Especially the velcro

the defense should have had weeger over doughty IMO. hyman if he didnt had a slow start in the beginning of the year. thompson as goalie over jordan binnington . fire doug armstrong and his selections. cirelli is a questionmark.. as well. coopers boys.

Once you get past McDavid and McKinnon, this offense just falls down the man-hole.....and that includes Crosby. And their blueline without Makar, is pretty pedestrian.

Not sure they have what it takes to even get to the final.....but if they do, they're going to have to find a way solve Hellebucyk.....the USA edge in the crease is massive.

Marchand looked slow but he also played smarter than some of the other guys out there today.

And it really seemed like they needed brains and willingness more than whatever they were getting from some of the other wingers.

Ill never be a marner guy. Two bad games, but he had the OT goal.

Crosby looked more like the injured player we expected to see, but I think he elevates and returns to the form we saw against Sweden in the remaining game(s).

McDavid felt so up and down all game. It was either working or you saw him skating ahead of where his brain was. Lot of turnovers or unintelligent plays.

I think that Tampa line has worked well, but idk, between those guys and Jarvis… there’s some benefit in moving their speed up. I just don’t think the top six is mixed too well, and it showed in that third when the USA sat back and they couldn’t generate. Just zero chemistry.

And Makar, while not great in the first game, was sorely missed. Theodore too, but alas

But all this is moot if goalies were equal. It’s 3-1 after two and Canada shuts it down pretty easily against a non-Hughes, injured Tkachuk US team.

chytil is an example of this. guy has been noticeable/dangerous every game with that north/south speed

Lots to talk about in this game, both good and bad, but it really came down to sivington. I thought both goals he should have had, that first one was uglier and the second goes just right through him.

That's a....unique take. I understand your frustration.

I think Marner's much worse simply *because* of the inconsistency. He'll play hero for a few shifts a game, but he'll never turn it on completely. He's so much worse because he's just naturally better than EP at everything except shooting. EP looks a little crooked, but Marner's just off-the-wall. Marner even has the smarts. It's like if Daigle had a lick of economic sense. Complete maverick. Doesn't really want to be on the ice anymore.

Yeah, if I was a coach that's a public dressing down. It was the most casual pass I've seen since the days of the Bieksa slide-back D-to-D. In that situation, you can see why the Leafs lose all the time, considering his and Matthews performances separately.

Couldn't watch the game for family reasons. The highlights were disturbing. this is international hockey; fighting should be a game misconduct ... ie you miss the next game. I have been advocating for over 50 years that fighting in a sport is ludicrous.

Anyhow this silly tournament is over pretty much. The US wins. My last choice. Will not bother to watch anymore unless a Canada US final.

It's an NHL event with only NHL players playing under NHL rules.

You guys complain about Brad the rat and fatboy from LA but Crosby was the worst player on the ice by far. At this point he is just playing for the love of the game and for padding some stats in the NHL. Murica has less skill but played with more heart than Canada.

Canada had enough chances especially right in front of the net but just couldn't bury them.

I think USA looked like the faster and for some reason fresher team but this was a pretty even game.

USA just defended in transition really well and mitigated whatever speed Canada does have outside of the McDavid goal. It looked like USA had all 5 guys surrounding their blueline for most of the game.

I think the lines perhaps could use a better mix of skill and grit instead of overloading the top-6 with skill and having a bottom-6 of grinders only. Both McDavid and Crosby have shown that they play well with at least 1 grinder on their wing.

Not to mention this will lead to more even ice-time which seems essential given how tired McDavid and Mackinnon already look. McDavid doesn't need to play 23 minutes at 80%, I rather he played 18 mins @ 100%.

Billy normally I love your input but I think you're alone on this one!

If you really think about it

US always dominate the sports that they take it seriously.

It’s only a matter of time before they take over the majority of nhl

Ah well
That's the murican excuse when they lose. They take all sports seriously and invest the most money with the exception of real football( the only real gloabal sport) where they would suck no matter what because they don't have the heritage to attract the big talents and to compete with the big european clubs.

The Biggest thing Petey has to work on this offseason is his burst - ie strength training for his legs. He's gotta get a trainer to whip him into shape - hopefully he takes this seriously. I fully believe he can get back to a 90 + player if he gets his speed up on the ice - he used to be in the 90th percentile ish for a lot of speed stats before this year he's a fraction of that..........
Problem with athletes of this caliber is more often overtraining.

He does need to make sure his people are top of the line tho. This issue should be fixable with in a summer of effective training. Asuming his knee is healthy going in to the summer.
