He's a good bottom 6 player who has been snakebitten on his scoring. I think if we had more talented forwards he would have better stats. He's a hard worker.

I see Foligno as an important piece for the CBJ to acquire to help move from the "head down quitter squad" of the last two seasons to the "we are bad, but we actually compete in every game" squad that we have now. A big part of the ACTUAL culture change we have been seeing.
It'd be nice to have Methot right about now with J. Johnson and Wisniewski out, but he was penciled in as a bottom pair d-man with a lot of guys nipping at his heels.

20 games isn't exactly hindsight.
I liked this trade then and I like it now. Methot can be a piece of work. He is a capable enough player and he can also be wildly inconsistent. If he ends up being a consistent player for your team, good for you and good for him.
Time will tell, for you, if he really is a legitimate top 4 d-man for you. He certainly played that way for stretches with us. He also played like total garbage for stretches too.
But much better end of the deal as Espen suggests? No. Methot was expendable and we got back good value in return. We need a little more from Foligno on the offensive end of the ice, but we need that from everyone so it's not exactly something uncommon to this team. This is his first season in the West, along with a few other players. I expected a drop off this season to be honest. Playing in the West is quite a bit different.

I like it as of now. We have/had logjam at D. Foligno is valuable player in getting this franchise to becoming winner, the guy despises losing and gives everything on the ice.

i agree that Foligno is a good character player, and should be a really good influence in that respect - unfortunately his lack of goals is what sunk him a bit in Ottawa.

As a fan of both teams, I loved the deal all around. I think the Sens get exactly what they need - a top-4 defensive defenseman, a guy that fit right in alongside Erik Karlsson and has been absolutely huge on an already good team.
What the Jackets get is a hard working, blue collar forward that will help immensely in the rebuild, because he doesn't give up on any shift and provides good leadership. Also, the depth scoring will be huge when we finally do add some talent (Foligno isn't going to score 40-50 points with the matchups he's getting).
Solid deal all around ... one of those under the radar trades that everyone will look back on and notice in a few years.

Its a solid deal for both teams. I love Methot in Ottawa, but Foligno was one of my favorite Sens. I wish we could have gotten Methot for a different package.

Methot has been, to put it mildly, outstanding in Ottawa. Our understanding from Cbus fans when he came over was that he was a bottom pairing kinda guy.
Im wondering if you guys had any theories on why his game has elevated so much if thats the case, because its really kind of a mystery to a lot of us. Did you see the potential? Was he just not a right fit?
I hope this isnt taken badly, I know on HF talking about players involved in trades is usually a "we won/no we won" thing, but thats not in any way what I am here for (though it is good to see Foligno doing well for you guys).

Here, he IS a bottom pairing guy. #4 dman at best.
I don't recall what the reaction here was but, MM for Foligno seemed/still seems like a win-win. We had dmen to spare. Nicky added a bit of firepower to our forwards.
When he was here he was so hot-warm-cold... had mostly good nights with flashes of WTF??

Is he the way he is playing this year though, or just the way he played there? I mean, Ottawa has the best D in the league if you go by goals against a game, and he is arguably the #1 D man with Karlsson out.
I mean, he is ahead of guys like Phillips and Gonchar...they are top 4 D on any team in the league.
I cant imagine if he was playing like this he wasnt on your top pairing, so it leads me to believe he simply wasnt as good there. Im just curious about why that is.

Methot was always this good, it's just he never had the partner to compliment him and he couldn't always play this way, and he is given more ice time with you guys. It isn't surprising really, but he isn't as good as 3 of our top 4 defenseman (Nikitin and him are about equal.) and we have alot of Dmen on the way. Don't regret the move at all as Foligno has been awesome for us too.

Methot had a very, very good stretch a few years back, where he went on a long point streak and started playing up to the potential that I always saw when he was younger. I was disappointed to see him cool off and never get back to that level - but, he was always an effective defender.
I think he was a guy that just needed a change of scenery, and I'm glad to see it paying off. The best thing the Jackets did for some of their players was to give them chances elsewhere ... now, I don't think it would be an issue anymore, with the new found grit and determination of this team - but both of those things were always questions in the past, which, I think, is why you never saw a guy like Marc Methot living up to his full potential.
Very glad to see it work out for the Sens, who are definitely one of my favorite teams outside of Columbus. You're about the only other board on HF that's ever made me feel welcome ... and I usually only post to give people info on their prospects!

The guy was great at times in Columbus, just inconsistent. He always had great mobility and just wasn't always focused. And now he is playing consistently well in Ottawa which makes him a huge asset for them.
On Foligno:
I still don't think Jackets fans fully understand how important this guy is. He has been great in our end, great at getting the puck up ice, great on the cycle, and great at getting the puck to dangerous areas off of the cycle. Yeah he isn't much of a goal scorer, and probably never will be without a good shot. But he creates offence either way. Every line you stick him on is effective. Pair him with Duby and Calvert and he has them going. Pair him with Johansen and Umberger and all of a sudden those guys are tearing it up.

I was a Methot supporter before he gained popularity in Columbus but I like the trade for Foligno.. I think Nick has been a part of the apparent culture change in the CBJ room after Nash was moved and JD/JK where hired... I like Foligno’s grit and never-quit attitude...

Methot always seemed to have pretty good potential when he was here, albeit inconsistent (there were plenty of theories why.) He was a top 4 defenseman but was pushed out by the successful pairings of Johnson and Wiz, and Tyutin and Nikitin. Going into this season there was a surplus of serviceable defensemen but not enough forwards, especially the type that could be slotted in a top 6 roll. Sounds to me like he has gained consistency and is probably playing like he did for CBJ when he was at the top of his game. Whether it is because he has finally reached his potential, or needed a change in scenery, or if it has something to do with Ottawa, I don't know. But it is good to hear that he has probably taken that next step and is/will be a good defenseman for you all.

I think it's a win-win. Much of Foligno's value hasn't shown in the stats, as he's done a lot of good work around the net and in defense. Methot would have sat a lot this year for us. Best fir everyone involved, really, Which makes it a great trade.
