I don't think Komi qualified under the league stipulations for the expedited buyout

Not aware of any league rules that would have prevented a buyout of Komi using the special accelerated compliance buyout. There was a stipulation that a player had to have a cap hit in excess of $3M which Komi did. I think simply the Leafs considered Komi in their plans before the season started. Understandable considering Komi was one of only 6 D with NHL experience on the pre-season roster. Further, one of them, Gardner was still iffy from a concussion injury. After the season started, many of us were pleasantly surprised how Komi actually looked like a decent D. However after being assessed against the 3 D from the Marlies and improved play of Franson, Komi has sat out after getting in only 4 games early in the season. Given his bloated contract, it's reasonable to see him now as a compliance buyout candidate this June. And also why he was not a candidate during the pre-season. At least that's how I see it.
