The Carey Price Discussion Thread (part 2)

I see the CP Bat signal has been sent, the fanboys are crawling out of the woodwork. Their latest nonsense is to discredit the 7-1-1 Budaj who might just be the guy who gets us out of this tailspin.

All things considered, Budaj has had a horrible career as a starter and is not an option as a starting goalie for any medium-to-long stretch of time.

Yeah he was a sieve against the Leafs, yeah he let in 6 goals against the Flyers but we're a playoff team and need to keep playing him until he gets it together again. The defense and the backcheck are more worrisome.

So unless this is Price's Tommy Salo moment, I don't understand the hubbub about Price. Unless he definitively bombs in the coming playoffs there should be no debate about his place on the team. Our fortunes are tied to him for the next six years, why waste time arguing his place? He's a #1 NHL goalie and he's our #1... It's not going to change.

Agreed, but what's the harm in giving the starter role to Budaj (who's actually earned it), and forcing Price to actually win the role back? Not once has he ever had to fight for his job.

We might get there someday, but one bad games followed by one bad goal is not the time. When we traded halak it gave price the #1 job, telling a goalie who has been historically great for us that all of that plays second fiddle to two bad games makes no sense. FCS he just might have a case of the yips, let him work it out. If he continues to struggle we can cross that bridge then, but if you sit him now your telling the one guy we NEED for the future that we have lost confidence in him.

Goalies are a strange lot, hasn't the franchise suffered enough by forcing goalies to do stuff with little benefit? We can't go through that again.

The best thing we can do it have the team say to price" listen kid, you have kept this team in games we had no right to be in. We know you are struggling, but we have nothing but confidence in you. if it takes the rest of the regular season for you to work it out, then so be it but you are going to get your chances to play and we are going to do everything we can to play better in front of you"

Does Budaj play defence? The D is letting us down big time right now. All the moaning is about Price (who is partially responsible) but our biggest trouble is the defensive zone play. Wake up people, it's not all on Price.

Explain how exactly he has earned the starter role with his 9 starts this season. Classic panic reaction from some people. :shakehead

Oh no...the sky is falling!!! :walrus:

Doesn't help to know the defence has to be near perfect or it will be in the back of the net.

Why should anyone on the defense care when the coach doesn't . Price is lifted after 3 shots on Saturday, the coach goes back with him to watch another bed ********. The 7-1-1 backup sits waiting to clean up another Price mess.

Put Budaj in net, things will straighten out. Then you can put Price back in.

Or we can just watch the division slip away and brace for a loss at the hands of the Leafs .

7-1-1 , better stats than Price, Price in a slump, the division championship on the line.

Is that enough?

We're, what, 8 games away from the playoffs? You really think this is the time to invest our hopes in Budaj who, while he's having a great year as a back-up, has never proven to be a reliable NHL starter in his entire career?

Budaj's record is glittering, but it's a 9 game sample size.

Sometimes I can't possibly believe you watch the same games as everyone else.

I think that Price is a very good goalie. I think we need him to be great to have a chance in de PO.

But I also think that MT should play Budaj for 2-3 games to let Price get is act together and to wake up the team.

Really? Are you serious? He didn't have to fight for the job against Halak? And with all due respect to Budaj he is not at the same level as Price. Yes Price has to wake up but its not by anointing Budaj the starter that will help.

Price is our guy! Give him some time to calm down and re focus. He's at his best when he plays loose and relaxed. I hope Therien tells his to forget the media, fans and the pressure. Go have some fun and attack that puck.

I remember Budaj's first games this year. Everybody was crapping on him, claiming he would never win us a game.

How times change. What a fickle and childish fanbase. Throws a tantrum when things don't go their way.

no, no one cares about the division championship. Yes it helps to get more home games but no one cares ( the kings won the cup despite sneaking into the playoffs last year but no one cares). Its less meaningless than the presidents trophy.

what matters is the playoffs and as much as I like Budaj, if we go in with him as the number one we are cooked. if it takes price the remainder of the regular season ( one in which we were predicted to be playing golf at its completion) then its worth it. Short term pain for long term gain. if we dont want two be on the outside when the second round starts we need price in net, if it means giving him the time to work through whatever is ailing him, thats fine by me. he's NOT going to get better on the bench.

I liked the budaj deal and extension because I though it would finally put the goalie controversy to bed. If we play budaj and he stinks, where do we go next ? Hamilton ?

like it or not Carey price is the number one goalie in montreal now, and likely in the future. He is struggling now, hes not going toget over it riding the pines.

He was terrible against the leafs, and subpar last night but the defense didnt help either. With back to back games coming wed and thurs you have to play him one of the games. Probably against the Pens, but you can find pros and cons for him to start either of the 2 games. Defense needs to get its **** together or it wont matter who is playing anyways.

Go with Budaj for the next game or two.
thats not a panic move or anything. Let him get back to his game.

I dont know of a single goalie who ever refound his game on the bench.

His play is currently a concern but its not panic time now. I dont think hes forgotten how to play goal, give him the time to work it out IN GAMES. if it costs us points and the bruins pass us, that's okay by me because I'd rather finish 4th or 5th but have a chance to go beyond the first round. If he cant turn it around then we have choices to make in the playoffs, ride the guy who has been one of the teams best players over the last three years, or become the flyers and throw a guy with very little starting experience between the pipes into the mix and hope for the best.

The funny thing is, that even if he returns to last years form, in the future the price haters are going to recall these two games about how he cost us the division championship.
