Whoever comes first in the Pacific plays one of the 2 wildcards. Whoever comes second hits third in the Pacific (thats the sharks or ducks) and not the worst of the 2 central teams :(.

With this new format winning the division is SUPER important.

Actually, right now in terms of pace, both wild-cards are projected to come from the Pacific as well, so winning the division would be the difference between facing Vancouver/Phoenix and facing Anaheim/San Jose. Still important, for sure, especially with the guaranteed home-ice advantage for two rounds.

only 8 of 28 winners have won the Cup
So 29% of the time, the President's Trophy winner wins the Cup? That's pretty good. I bet the 2nd or 3rd or 4th seeds ect. haven't won it that often during the same time span.

and 29% of them were either eliminated in the first round or didn't make the playoffs the next season.

it hangs a target on the winner's back that opponents aim for. no reason to give an opponent any reason for an emotional lift.

the Presidents Trophy is just a useless dusty banner in the rafters that means nothing

The Western conference is pretty stacked, whoever we play is going to be a pretty good team.

If it means nothing, then why do you care either way?

I want the President's Trophy. I want this team to win everything they can. Total domination is the ultimate satisfaction. This team has a target on their back because they're really good, the PT doesn't impact that.

And most importantly, the PT assures that we play the second of the two wild card teams and have home ice through the playoffs. So yes, go get it.

Kings have another game in Chicago coming up in a few games. That's one I'd like to win and we would gain some ground, should that be the case.

Getting any wins against Chicago even if it only ends up being one in the regular season will go a long way to help the team's confidence against them, I think.
