The Athletic released their top 125 player list today:

Top of the list is:

1A - Connor McDavid
1B - Leon Draisaitl
1B - Nathan MacKinnon
1B - Auston Matthews
1B - Cale Makar
1C - Jack Hughes
1C - David Pastrnak
1C - Matthew Tkachuk
1C - Adam Fox

2A - Sidney Crosby
2A - Kirill Kaprizov
2A - Nikita Kucherov
2A - Mitch Marner
2A - Mikko Rantanen
2A - Jason Robertson
2A - Charlie McAvoy
2B - Sebastian Aho
2B - Aleksander Barkov
2B - Jack Eichel
2B - Elias Pettersson
2B - Brayden Point
2B - Miro Heiskanen
2B - Roman Josi
2C - Roope Hintz
2C - Nico Hischier
2C - Brad Marchand
2C - Rasmus Dahlin
2C - Victor Hedman
2C - Erik Karlsson

Also notable that they listed Connor Bedard as a 3C on the list - 49th overall.

From a team perspective, Carolina and Edmonton had the most players on the list with 7 each. Devils, Sabres and Kings all had 6 each (though no Kings were higher than 3C), while unsurprisingly Philly and San Jose had the least amount of players with 1 each.

Lol. Hedman is like 4C this last year.

Panarin with 4th most points in last 5 years, but not even making this list. Ok then.

So it is based on the last season or multiple last seasons?

The list is based on expectations for this upcoming season, which is how Bedard is on it.

Panarin is also on the list, though he's steadily been declining. I only listed the top 2 tiers as I wasn't about to type out all 125 names.

I have no problem with this, as a Wild fan. Kaprizov has tier one talent, but was injured. Boldy has the talent to be in a higher tier, but has to prove it on ice, though it would help if he had better linemates. Spurgeon and Brodin are very solid top Dmen that won't put up tons of points, but coaches will love them.

Sad to see Malkin so low. Wasn't that long ago that he'd be in the first tier. Again, injuries.

I'd also move Kucherov to 1B (crazy how he always gets underrated) - but outside of that I like this list quite a bit, at least at the top. Maybe a couple of minor tweaks - but nothing jumps out as particularly bad. Which almost never happens on such lists.

Are they actually ranking within tiers, or just listing players? ie are they saying Drai > Mack > Matthews, or is it just Drai ~ Mack ~ Matthews?

Just eyeballing it, but I believe in the A,B,C portion of the tiers, they are going Centers - Wingers - Defense. And then in each of those they are listed alphabetical by last name

just from going through the list, i would say they are not ranked only listed. criterias:
1) forwards alphabetically
2) defensemmen alphabetically

I'm not sure what your issue with this is? Too high or low...

nitpicking really.

i think nico is the better player all things considered going forward..... not saying nico is above the other 2B ranked players (maybe aho) ....but eichel seems be elevated in rankings compared to his peers on various lists around

That'll happen when you play really well in the playoffs and the other guy shits the bed.
