The Athletic: Maple Leafs and Panthers rosters weakened the most during the off season

One of the most parity driven off-seasons I've seen, that's for sure.

Without looking into fancy charts, I think there were 3 playoff teams that were able to add significant players without losing significant players (not counting TDL guys).

Last 2 years have been highly unusual seasons in a lot of ways, so many teams racking up fat points percentages unheard of in years past. It's probably coming back now with a more competitive playing field across the league.

Should be a fun one.

Yeah because of the flat cap. When the cap jumps again in a couple years, you may see a couple juggernauts re-emerge.

Meh, I don’t see it tbh. They lost two frequently injured forwards who the team didn’t lose a beat without when they were out, a good D man but not irreplaceable one and a very shaky 1B goalie. Of course other depth pieces too.

Even though he has Florida at 110 points for 2023 (which I feel is accurate) I hate how he's including Giroux and Chariot when Florida was on a 120 point pace before getting them.
Yeah that shit is annoying when people say we lost Giroux (screw Chiarot, if we weren’t that bad defensively I’d say he’s addition by subtraction).
We lost first round picks.

I don’t see how the Leafs weakened. Goaltending is the only thing they changed and it seems like a lateral move there- Samsonov is better than Mrazek and Murray could rebound and be as good as if not better than Campbell (who isn’t that great).

An important caveat that’s relevant to the Leafs goaltending situation is that this is not strictly last year vs this year. It’s the current expected value of players in minus players out.

So Campbell is expected to be worth 1.4 wins this season based on his historical play (Murray 0.3). How he actually played last season was a -1.2 win pace… Mrazek was even worse.

There’s two things that are both true. The leafs downgraded goaltending based on how good you expect Campbell/Murray/ Samsonov to play this upcoming year. That’s undeniable. But it’s also true that the Leafs should still expect to get better goaltending than they got last year.

Both Toronto and Florida had really good seasons so it would be really hard to improve on that. Even if they went back to their expected averages, they're both still top 5-ish NHL teams.

Florida was the highest scoring team in the last 25 years. They could score 50 less goals next year and still be one of the top 10 offensive teams in the NHL. People really gloss over how incredible of a season they had because they got swept in the second round.

The Leafs somehow had a 115 point season while having the 8th worst goaltending in the league.

I can't wait to see all the reactions when the Panthers and Leafs finish in the top 2 spots in the Atlantic again.

I don't think Dom meant standings wise for this, he probably means win/losses. If that's the case they could be "weakened" and still be top 2 in the division.

EDIT: Lol it says win-losses in the IG scroll so both of your points can be true.

Combined with when the veteran teams finally crack. It'll be interesting how their remaining talent is distributed to other teams once they start burning stuff to the ground.

Good point. It could be a very interesting time, you may see a couple teams just say "screw it", load up and go for it.

Pretty sure your getting a whole lot of "meh" from the hockey world. When they do something in the post season - or should I say when they don't - your going to get some big reactions then either way it goes.

I'm just responding to "Leafs and Panthers rosters weakened the most". So a 122 pt team and a 115 pt team got weaker....ok. Yawn. Is anybody still gonna catch us in the regular season?

And enjoy it now, because next offseason Florida has over 15M in cap space, and you know Zito is gonna spend it.
