For the C position I think we need a Malhotra replacement who can play centre on the fourth line and so Lappy can play the wing. Ideally a big body ala Antropov or Handzous who could be had for very cheap. I know their footspeed isn't going to blow anyone away but they won't be playing with Raymond or Hansen. If Schroder can't hack it in the playoffs or the regular season then Lappy can take his spot.
Aside from a top 6 winger upgrade, I still think we need to replace Raffi Torres. This is our 2nd season without him and we still haven't replaced his toughness in our lineup. Yes we have Zack Kassian, but he doesn't play with that pitbull nastiness.
I'm actually glad they let Torres walk. His utility was questionable.
Any suggestions?

The team seems pretty deep on wing. Anyone brought in would have to unseat an option. C might be a more important position to solidify.
I'm enjoying that everyone in our top 9 right now can stickhandle and pass.

I think we're pretty set at C with Sedin-Kesler-Schroeder-Lapierre down the middle. Another option wouldn't be bad, but we definitely need another winger or two. I do not want to see Weise or Volpatti taking regular shifts in the playoffs.
Cal Clutterbuck would be the perfect target, but I highly doubt a trade for him would happen. Matt Martin would be another nice target, although not as skilled as Clutterbuck.
I'd like Matt Martin way more than Clutterbuck, hits harder, and actually backs up what he does on the ice.
Clutterbuck is of the same ilk as Dustin Brown...throws predatory hits then hides behind his teams tough guys.
I do like his moustache though.

A cheap C should be the priority IMO. Maybe Matthias, Eller or Bailey. Someone that is versatile enough to play other positions and cheap enough to retain. The c depth may look set, but they should insulate the position with the loss of Manny and the youth of Schroeder. It doesn't seem set to me.
Weise has been good defensively in the past. I have little issue with him getting a regular shift in the playoffs.
Martin is the first player I thought of when you posted. No way he gets pried out of NY given his value to them vs the value in trade. Clutter buck may be possible but unlikely. Anyone else? Two unlikely options there.

Not sure what Matthias, Eller or Bailey really do for us. If we can rent someone like Stephen Weiss (if he comes in a Luongo trade it's even possible to re-sign him going forward too assuming guys like Raymond and Higgins aren't brought back) then I'd look into that option. But bringing in a random C because he can play C doesn't make much sense to me.
Brian Boyle probably keeps both of us happy, but with the Rangers being competitive I don't know that they'd be willing to move him.
I just see Weise as a filler type player who doesn't really do much to impress me. Ideally he's a 13th forward in the playoffs.
Weise can be a legit 3rd liner on a good team. He has that upside. What we are seeing now is him slowly getting back to where he was, instead of being a scorer in Europe. He is getting his game back. I really like what he adds for the cost. Underrated.
The younger options I listed still have upside to get better.
Weiss seems like the best answer. Looking forward to what happens in FLA as we move on.
If we are loading up for a Cup run, acquiring guys who can develop in future years isn't the best move to make. I don't see what any of these players add to our roster THIS year. And if Dale Weise is on our 3rd line this year we are royally screwed. I would even say someone like Aaron Volpatti is a better option because at least he serves a role out there. I'm not exactly sure what Dale Weise really does.
Gillis doesn't load up, he makes under the radar acquisitions at the right time.
Gillis doesn't load up, he makes under the radar acquisitions at the right time. See Higgins and Lapierre. It's the same with thee young players that show promise, that should do better in different situations. You think the team needs drastic additions, I don't. There's a difference in how we see his team. Clearly.
Weise is a better skater, offensive forchecker, passer, stick handler etc... Than Volpatti. I wouldn't confuse Volpatti being better at his role as being the better player. He isn't.
You're right, we need more stickhandling specialists.
Seriously though, Weise doesn't really contribute much. He's not a big fighter (he'll drop 'em but that's not his main role), he isn't a defensive specialist, he doesn't generate any offense, he's not a big hitter, he doesn't take face-offs (not a center). To me he's just a plug.
I would suggest adding Higgins and Lapierre as a way of loading up in the 2010-11 season. We didn't appear to really need a whole lot, and those were the perfect acquisitions. We need something similar this year, and I don't see what someone like Matthias, Bailey or Eller would really do.
