Well I don't think Toronto would do a deal for Byram without assurances of him extending

This is a bad deal.
Honestly, my first impression was also that it was too much to give up for Knies, so I hear you. It may not be great value, but my thought process was that giving up...
  • a Byram who won't re-sign with us anyway (in this scenario),
  • Quinn, who hasn't broken out yet and will need to be re-signed anyway, and
  • a late first
...doesn't really hurt that much.

To be clear, I would prefer both Byram and Tuch to be re-signed if possible, but if that can't happen, I'd be ok with Kesselring instead of Byram, Knies instead of Tuch, and Kulich instead of Quinn long term. I am a Knies fan and think he would be a great fit.

Seems like blowing assets for no reason.

Knies probably has more value than Byram but it isn't that much. I wouldn't do Byram plus Quinn or Byram + 1st. Both are overpays... the plus in addition to Byram should be relatively small.
Byram would be Leafs best dman by a significant margin and Knies is going to be like their 3rd best winger in short order.

Yurov plus picks. He is best buds with Hughes, they really really really need a center, Guerin is batshit insane and he probably has a NTC or NMC, so that alone will help.
Not saying you're wrong, but I think it's funny how many best friends Quinn supposedly has: Larkin, Werenski, Norris, Tkachuk have all been reported.
