Hopefully Yzerman stands still unless we get what we truly need. Another top center and a legit 2nd or 3rd capable defensemen both 25 to 28 year old range.

Absolutely needs a top 4 D-man. If he stands pat he needs to call up Ed/johanssen. This D-core can’t handle any pressure and lacks mobility. 3 guys are kinda capable of skating with top teams (walman, seider, chiarot). Ghost at times can. The rest crumble under a FC

And a random 50 goal scorer some team has laying around too?
To be fair, the team's problem isn't offense. The problem is that a lot of our roster is full of pretty low IQ players who are easily abused by superstar teams, especially when they have last change.

Ghost, Maatta, Petry, Kostin, Ras, Copp, Sprong, Walman, and Veleno are either too inexperienced or just flat out unequipped to deal with guys liie Makar, Rantanen, and McKinnon.

This is what happens when you are arguably the worst team in the league for like five seasons and your picks are 4, 6, 6, 6, 8, 9, 9 while better teams than you get higher draft picks.

This is why Yzerman needs to stop relying on the draft and picking through garbage cans and start making trades for legit talent.

I agree. They need some D that can close gaps, but also transition the puck up well. In fairness I think they have some really good ones in the prospect pool, but not established ones. If it was up to me I would have walman, seider, ghost, chiarot in the lineup with an addition of an established legit top 4 guy and and ed/johanssen call up

Who can Detroit trade for that won’t require a big return? No one is going to part with a center or defender Detroit would need without asking for Mo and/or Ed in return. No one is going to take spare parts and B tier prospects for impact players outside of a rare occasion like with ADB and the player actively wants out specifically to your team.

Not like Vegas had to give up that much for the best defender on the market. Prices aren’t that high and Detroit has loads of good prospects/picks. Reality is Detroit is going to have to move some good prospects for immediate help at some point here. There isn’t enough space for all these guys

Hanifin is a good defender but he’s not a piece you build around. Ideally he’s your third defender who is good all around but not stellar in any one area.

We need some D help so we don't give up touchdowns anymore...

Not much you can do when the 3 stars are absolutely flying. It would be like asking any team to stop Gretzky, Kurri and Coffey when all of them are on their game. We only won against Colorado last time, because those 3 weren't in domination mode. We can't compete with the top teams and really aren't close from a skill standpoint.

Agree. It's a long journey from being a bottom feeder, like we have been for the last ~7 years, to a top team. Right now, we're in the middle of the pack, but being in real contention is still a long way to go. Getting manhandled by Avs and Cats proves that renting players for future assets is not the right strategy this TDL. The possibility of actually making the playoffs, however, makes it harder to decide if selling Ghost, Sprong or Perron is a good idea or not. There is value in getting post season experience

also, I'm doubting there's a ton of value in moving those guys. We're not getting a 1st for any of them, and a handful more 3rd and 4th round picks...eh.

It depressingly feels like the options follow:
Make a small trade, squeak into playoffs , first round exit
Make a small trade, miss the playoffs
Make no trade, miss playoffs or immediate first round exit

this team is so infuriating to watch. They're doing what they did last year again, and choking it all away right before the deadline

I honestly wonder if Yzerman sells again despite being in a Playoff spot (for the time being, the Isles will likely pass us by early next week)

Depending how they finish the season, I'd consider reshuffling everything. At some point Yzerman's going to have to realize he does actually need a player better than Larkin on offense if you want to seriously contend for a cup.

The one thing is is he doesn’t have the premium assets that he can sell this year and get high picks. I firmly believe Kane is getting extended. That leaves guys like Perron, sprong, ghost as trade chips. I like the players but I don’t think they get us any premium assets
