Magic beans? You can feel free to assess that post however you want, but all I was saying is that there is not a magical solution to where we can land a superior talent in the here and now with Kreiders cap space. You want to start making the playoffs then these are the deals you sign. The kids aren’t going to turn around and be super stars in one season. Why would be just bank cap space for years when Staal Smith and Hank come off the books soon enough.
There isn't empty cap. Those guys literally do not come off soon enough. It's one year too late. We had to ship out Skjei to accommodate the surplus and dead cap from previous buyouts. We have to ship out buch or strome to fix the left d. This is what people ignore. You want to make the playoffs, you have to build a balanced roster. There is no magical solution to fix left defense. It will cost cap we do not have, and certainly assets that are uncomfortable to part with. Everyone can feel free to assess if keeping Kreider was worth all of that, and we will see if the team is any closer next year.

And btw, you keep forcing the narrative that people are looking for a magical upgrade on Kreider for less. That has never been the contention. The idea is to accept his loss and let the young wings absorb some of the responsibility. Use his cap to fix other glaring issues.

Don't we want the Rangers pick to be first overall, the Hurricanes to be second, and the Maple Leafs third?

Because the Maple Leafs is third (and a top-10 protected), it goes back to Toronto. However the Hurricanes are on the hook to give us whatever pick they have if they only have one.

So therefore we get the first and second picks. I guess in this scenario it wouldn't matter if the Rangers or Carolina get the #1 overall, as long as the other team gets #2 overall. The lynchpin is that Toronto has to be 3 -- or backslide into the top 10 without winning the lottery, so that the pick reconveys to Toronto.

Of course this is the Rangers, though. Setting aside last year's Kakko win, we don't get that kind of luck. The f'n Devils can win the lottery two years out of three, but the Rangers will get stuck picking 14 and 21, book it.

I think we all can see the cap crunch is going to be this upcoming season. The team has a few options such as trading Staal, Smith and/or Hank, trading guys like Buch/Strome/others, or buyouts (which hinder 2021-2022). They’re going to run into the same issue as they did this past summer though in that other teams will see their cap dilemma and more than likely aren’t going to do them any favors. That means the buyout route is more than likely again.

True, but with just one year left, teams may not view taking a player like Staal or Lundqvist to be a favor, they may actually want that player for a year.

Been beating the Lindholm drum since @Mikos87 's post stating Anaheim is tearing it down. Lindholm would be an incredible get.

Carolina 1st, Buchnevich, and Robertson/Miller will probably end up being the price. I close my eyes and do it if I'm the guy in charge.

That's way too much for us right now I think.

contract details

the NMC disappears the last two seasons which is helpful.

it’s front loaded so that gives buyout flexibility if need be

This is all good stuff. Low cap hit is key. And it’s friggen low.

What are the rules on front loading? If you are a cash-rich team like the Rangers, why wouldn't you always front-load? The player assuredly would much rather get the money sooner, and if you are the team, you'd obviously rather help your buyout numbers if you have to move on from the player later.

I didn't want to start making the playoffs yet. Wanted to save that for next year or the year after.

Strome will be resigned, Mika has his LW and Panarin will want his center. Say what you will but Panarin and Strome like playing with each other.

that’s why rich teams almost always do it this way.

Man, someone is gonna have to be cut loose.

We can't let a three week tear convince us that all our top-6 are 5+ year solutions.

stromes going to be looking at that pageau deal imo. Would be nuts for us to do. He should get a bridge deal. Nothing more. 2 years 10 mil. We can’t block Chytil who could break out any minute entirely.

There is no reason, from a Rangers perspective, not to front load pretty much every single contract.

kudos to Sakic for remaining patient. Meanwhile in Toronto, they had to sign Tavares, have to pay Nylander, etc. and we see the results.

The league is gonna want to address this in the next Cba is my guess. Everyone is doing it and every player is asking for it.

Buyout concerns aside it also makes them a lot more attractive to teams with internal budgets. The fact that Ottawa basically didn't have to pay Brassard anything was a large part of the Zibanejad trade.

+1

the operating income for Ottawa for 18/19 was only $3.6 million.

Chytil and Panarin arent complimentary players imo. Unless Chytil changes his play I dont see it, he's better suited to the players he is currently with. A bridge is the most likely Avenue imo. If Kreider wasnt resigned I'd have a different opinion as Panarin would move up with Zib, but he isnt gonna be happy losing his center man.

why? Let’s be honest even if we don’t make it our pick is in the teens anyway and it’s a strong draft so it’s not a big deal. Plus we just added another first. I would love the playoffs and kids getting some experience

that’s interesting.

Let me ask (a 5 year contract)

a player has a front loaded contract yet the team spreads the dollars out evenly throughout the contract. If the player retires in year 4 of the 5 year contract (or whenever), does he owe a greater portion of the money back? B/c the cap number is actually different than the dollars paid or owed and he didn’t fulfill his contract.

Absolutely. I cant bash his approach. There was no way he was giving up a ton for a rental. He was smart
