...who are out to conquer the earth!

Consider this thought experiment: the future of the globe depends on us humans winning a seven-game series against Team Outer Space Aliens - which 23 players throughout history (active players also allowed) would you select for that task?

Three goalies, seven defensemen and thirteen forwards.

my space jam team is

bobby hull gretzky rocket
messier beliveau howe
ovechkin trottier lafleur
gainey clarke neely

stevens orr
lidstrom harvey
potvin bourque

roy
brodeur (more for temperament and reliability than anything else)

if we get 22/25 man olympic-style rosters, my spares are kelly and mario, and my alternates are bossy, macinnis, and plante

Lidström - Pronger
Stevens - Bourque

How big are the aliens? I need to know if I'm building around a Neely-Lindros-Ovechkin Stevens-Pronger core or not.

In all seriousness, this approach would probably be the most successful against a team that expects to win by playing actual hockey. Just beat the **** out of ‘em with a Roy or Smith level clutch goalie.

You DEFINITELY need Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan in there.

yeah but you still want big/dirty players who are clutch. messier, of course. neely, claude lemieux, hell i thought for a second about theo fleury, also tikkanen.

lindros? no thanks. not a guy i can count on for all the marbles.

If it is a total unknown you can bet all in on best player type or you can go for a very diverse team (if you have access to a time machine like many of the poster seem to just assume they have), soviet era, pre ww1 players, sweden, african, first nation, etc....

Augment your change that at least 6 player survive the game exposed to the potential pathogen Alien carry or that one person understand their language, find a strategy the aliens never thought off and the rest of the humans player will easily mimic it.

I would also go with some Chara out there

Something like this

Hull-Béliveau(C)-Howe
Lemieux-Gretzky-Kurri
Messier-H.Richard-M.Richard
Gainey-Clarke-Makarov

Robinson-Orr
Potvin-Harvey
Bourque-Chelios

Roy
Plante

Spares: Crosby, Kennedy, Lafleur, Ovechkin, Shore, Savard, Sawchuk.

Love your Top 6

Still think Lemieux has to be on the team regardless.

im going to assume that the aliens are in charge, and that we wont be allowed to play some hybrid hockey/criminal assault weird Canadian religion thing without them zapping us.

So, im taking the best actual players, frozen in time at their peaks

ahem

Lemieux 89- Gretzky 85 - Jagr 98
Hull 68 - Beliveau 56 - Howe 53
Ovechkin 08 - Forsberg 02 - Lafleur 78

Orr 72 Lidstrom 06
Potvin 79 Bourque 88
Chelios 91 Harvey 57

Hasek 98

im not putting any spares there, and i only want 9 forwards. I want each of those skaters playing 20 minutes each.

NHL All time

Forwards

1. Gordie Howe – Wayne Gretzky – Mario Lemieux
2. Bobby Hull – Jean Beliveau – Maurice Richard
3. Jaromir Jagr – Mark Messier – Guy Lafleur
4. Alexander Ovechkin – Sidney Crosby – Mike Bossy
5. Howie Morenz/Phil Esposito

D-men
1. Bobby Orr – Doug Harvey
2. Ray Bourque – Nicklas Lidström
3. Paul Coffey – Eddie Shore
4. Denis Potvin – Red Kelly

Goalies

1: Dominik Hasek
2. Martin Brodeur
3. Patrick Roy

Lemieux Gretzky Kurri
Hull Beliveau Howe
Krutov Fedorov Makarov
Messier Clarke Lindros
Crosby

Orr Chelios
Potvin Bourque
Lidstrom Harvey
Kelly

Hasek
Brodeur
Bryzgalov

Gretzky and Lemieux are the top offensive pair while Kurri gives them defensive cover and has proven Gretzky chemistry. Beliveau gives some size, is probably the captain, and I figure would work well with Howe. Went with Hull over Ovechkin here as I think that Hull could probably contribute more without being the dominant puck carrier on the line. Might have gone with Ovechkin if I needed a winger to carry a line. I wanted the KLM line but I'm guessing that Fedorov (a better player than Larionov) could fill in that spot nicely while providing another elite defensive centre. It helps that he came up in the Soviet system. Clarke gets the primary defensive centre spot, Messier provides a good all around winger who (like Clarke) can escalate things if necessary, and Lindros is there as Earth's best physical monster if needed. I also suspect that Lindros would have been a great winger (more shooting, less passing) if utilized that way and I suspect that Clarke and Messier could more than keep him in line. Strongly considered Bill Cook here.

Orr is obvious and I suspect that Chelios would complement him well (while also providing the crazy factor that might be needed). This forces Orr to the left side, which is not his common spot but I think he'd be fine. I also considered Horton, Savard, Stevens, and Pronger for Chelios' spot. Potvin at peak is too good to ignore and Bourque is nearly there as well. Not sure how well they would mesh though. Lidstrom and Harvey is there as the safest pair I can think of. Kelly is there as a utility player who was elite on defence but could also play LW or C if needed.

Hasek is there as the best goaltender ever. Not sure if he's necessarily better than Roy for this style of team but I decided to just go with the best goaltender. Brodeur is there for personality reasons, as a relatively easy going goaltender among the all time greats. Bryzgalov is there to give intel on the aliens since the third goaltender won't matter anyway.

You guys are going about this all wrong.

Probert - Lindros - Brown
Gillies - Nystrom - Kocur
Brashear - Grimson - Domi
Twist - Fotiu - Laraque

Wilson - McSorley
Playfair - Cochrane
Gaetz - Chara

Hextall
Emery

Maybe we could add in guys like Zdeno Chara, Matt Cooke, Bobby Schmautz and Eric Lindros to get some offense in there?

Using Space Jam logic, it is 2000, and the Aliens have stolen the hockey skills of Mats Sundin, Jeremy Roenick, Theo Fleury, Zdeno Chara, and Rob Blake....and lets say Ed Belfour, because we need a 6th alien to play goal.

Our roster to beat the lineup will be Stan Marsh, Lisa Simpson, Wild Wing, the kid from Inside Out, and for some reason Bill Murray.

They quickly realize that they are hopelessly outmatched against the above lineup, unless the best hockey player in the world happens to be retired and escaped the noticed of those aliens, so here's Mario Lemieux!

On paper, that's still a clear win for the aliens, but are you betting against comeback Mario?

Shore, Claude Lemieux.
Indeed. We would need rule-breaking win-at-all-costs f-u guys.

Messier, Tikkanen, Marchand, Clarke,... Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde, Sprague Cleghorn, Denis Potvin, Chris Pronger,... Gordie Howe & Ted Lindsay OF COURSE (any list without those two put in the trash).

Plus Orr, Lemieux, Gretzky, .... Bobby Hull and Doug Harvey...

That's 18 skaters to trust to be able to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to save the human race.

Add whatever 2 skaters you want.

Goalies? Damn. My initial reaction was Billy Smith but I'd bet my life on a duo of Roy & Hasek.

Those who said Lafleur, Lidstrom, Coffey... really? If an alien cut off a finger and an ear of theirs and said "Pledge alliance to the Alien Army and you will survive the culling"... do you think they would say f you and take their last breath swinging at them? I don't. They ain't got the mustard.

Love this scenario!

John McClane from Die Hard... or... James Bond?

Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson's character) from Taken... or... Jason Bourne?

Captain Kirk vs. Captain Picard?

I 100 times out of 100 take the former over the latter choices.

Forsberg over Sakic.
Fetisov over Lidstrom.
Bill Cook vs. Maurice Richard (damn, flip a coin! Cook killed guys in WWI and led a unit - was beyond approach in the NHL because of his rep - and the Rocket was psycho-level competitive).

tbh the two guys i side eye the most in this respect are mario and hasek. literally quitters

A team based on "peak of powers" of the greats? Would have to be:

Goalie:

Roy

Backups:
Hasek/Lundqvist

Defensemen:
Orr - Potvin
Leetch - Bourque
Coffey - Chelios
Pronger - Park

Forwards

Hull - Gretzky - Bossy
Ovechkin - Messier - Howe
Kariya - Lemieux - LaFleur
LeClair - Sakic - Bure

Dream Team.
