Reminder - USA is 0-11 in World Championship Semifinals. If they ever finished higher than 3rd, it's because there was no Knockout Round.

1994, 1996, 2001, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2023, all reached the Semifinal round and lost.

One would figure they'd win a game by fluke one of these days if nothing else.

We actually have won a semifinal... but you have to go back to 1934 for it. We promptly lost the gold medal game to Canada that year.

Our lone gold in a standalone tournament, in 1933, also had a knockout round to determine the medalists.

But yeah, all our finishes higher than 3rd since 1934 have come from the final ranking being determined by a round-robin, including silver medals at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics that also counted as the world championships that year (with our gold in 1960 being the same way).

For me, thinking about it... Sweden. Granted, we can only face Sweden if Denmark pulls off the miracle (and Sweden beats the Czechs), so realistically that narrows it down to Canada or Switzerland, and I'd much rather face Switzerland than Canada.

As much as I enjoy that, I hope Canada gets upset today. We keep losing to y'all at the senior level. USAH just needs a breakthrough gold at this tournament more than anything that I don't care if it comes because of more preferable outcomes in the other games.

I agree... although I still consider it very unlikely that Denmark can pull off the upset against Canada even though it's still 0-0 after one period right now, I'd feel a lot better about our chances to win this thing if someone else takes out Canada for us.
