First of all, let's compare forwards to forwards and defense to defense. So it's Hägg, Folin, Fantenberg on defense. As I said earlier I haven't seen much of Hägg this season but I can see why you would choose the younger guy that played the most amount of games this season. They're not really a similar type of player, either. And as said Fantenberg was assigned. With that said(not a done deal with Hägg tho) they're six NHLers on defense so now they're holding spots for Hedman, Ekholm and Strålman. Small gamble for a potentially big reward, but not a headscratcher.
As for forwards, I think the management has a clearer picture than we do of what players are injured and how many spots they need to hold. If Rask, Lindholm etc. were a go we wouldn't have these invites. But we're still only up to 9 forwards one week before the tournament so I really don't see the problem. There's three spots left for opening night(Pettersson, Andersson as front-runners) and then there's a couple of spots beyond that aswell for later use too. If Landeskog, Nylander et. al. arrives, great, and if not that's the perfect amount of spots(3-5) for the guys in Europe to fight over.
There's about 15 invites right now and we have 25 roster spots. There's no jam, just a healthy competition. No one can convince me that we should have more than 5-6 guys from Europe on a WCH team, when there's about 80 guys playing NHL hockey in a season. Ideally I'd have a team of 25 NHLers, but when we're down to the third or fourth tier I understand why they don't take everybody available. That's why I think Nyström is out to lunch, he's looking for a problem that isn't there and he's overrating our European options(look no further than the Olympics for proof). He's also overplaying the Pettersson-angle that all the evil NHL grinders will take his spot(there's absolute no competition between DLR and Pettersson as an example; a gritty, speedy 4th liner killing penalties against a shifty playmaker playing powerplay). I want both on my team, but I don't want them competing against each other and I don't think they are.
