Phillips, Dan Bouwmeester, Dan Boyle, and Dion Phaneuf is the Defense Short List.

McCabe is supposed to replace Jovo (he's from the original taxi squad).

Spezza and Staal are the only two left on the taxi squad at the moment.

This certainly is an interesting bit of news. I think when the Canadian management named 3 reserves 2 months before the Games, it may have been somewhat short sighted. They didn't really have an obligation to the IIHF to name a "taxi-squad" of 3 players. Rather, they could have inserted any player who was on the original 81 man roster into the lineup, in case of injury to their main roster.

The 3 guys named to the team were given more of a ceremonial type honour, where the players would be invited by Hockey Canada to attend the Games in Turin (while staying outside of the Olympic Village). Perhaps the injury troubles that Spezza and McCabe, though not a forward have been having has caused Canada to make this decision.

EDIT: Actually, upon reading this article again, this probably isn't that big of a deal. It seems as though these players would only go if more injuries opened up prior to the start of the Games. Thus to answer SectionX, Spezza and Staal are still first in line.

to be honest with you, names like crosby and kariya scares me more than spezza and staal. Kariya is money in the national team and crosby would thrive on a great team. I am thankful these two players weren't selected from the start.

I dont think there is any obligation on Team Canada's part to give the spot to McCabe neccessarily. I think they will take him to Turino but they may also take Boumeester or Phaneuf...and then decide who to put into the lineup

He is the first injury replacement. He is on the real team as of today.

You kind of expect those selections.

At the time, I thought Bertuzzi and Draper were very questionable picks (and Doan to a lesser extent) and would have put Spezza and Staal on the team, with probably Tanguay filling the last spot. I would have then had Kariya, Crosby, Bertuzzi and I guess a guy that wouldn't be on everyone's list, but Jarret Stoll with the last pick. I really hate to compliment Oiler players, but this guy would look very good on Team Canada. Stoll would be my first pick replacement, and with Bertuzzi (this would have been said in December) see how he's doing. Right now, he wouldn't get a roster spot IMO, probably hand it to Stoll first, then Kariya.

If Crosby didn't caused any problem playing on the junior team last year with other juniors, I doubt he'll cause problems playing with veterans like Joe Sakic and other highly regarded players.

I would rather have Stoll then Doan or Draper right now. Bertuzzi too, but his offense is covered by Staal or Spezza.

Why hasn't John Madden ever gotten considered for Team Canada...he is as good or better at shutting down the other teams center and he is far better offensivly then Draper. Just something that has bothered me.
