Do you think it's a coincidence or do you think premier Canadian players prefer to play in the US?

Ok and?

If you want to give up your American #1 draft pick so he can play for a team located in his home country, go for it.

The future USA team will be made of Gretzky, lemiuex, sakic, etc the sons of the players

I mean if we were to go there sure have Matthews we'll take McDavid, Tavares, doughty..... Even though that's far from what I was implying

I guess others don't see it as strange or whatever as I do

From 2005-2015, A Canadian team has picked in the Top Five 10 times, 8 of those picks have been used on Canadians, 6 of those picks have come in the past four drafts excluding 2016, not a whole lot of time for those picks to have developed into players capable of playing on team Canada. Plus there's the cut off date for young players with team NA, but even without it I doubt any of the guys on team NA would've made the team this year, yes even McDavid.

The Good Ol' US-of-A has had a team pick 45 times in the Top 5 from 2005-2015. Honestly it's not all that surprising given the amount of teams in the States, and that Canadian teams for half that time ignored the draft and made attempts at getting better through trade and free agency. Leafs problems are well documented, Edmonton tried to recapture that '06 run magic before going full rebuild with Hall in 2010, Calgary tried to build around Iginla and Kiprusoff for years, Vancouver was contending and has refused to rebuild, Ottawa has been bouncing between a playoff team and not for a while and hasn't been bad enough to have too high of draft picks, Montreal has been in semi-contender status, and Winnipeg hasn't been bad enough for picking in the top five.

I doubt things will change too much in the future, assuming the league does go to the Olympics in 2018, you will have Price and McDavid there, with chances for Rielly, Scheifele, and a few other young players from Canadian teams. At best we'll maybe see 5 guys from Canadian teams in the next major tournament.

Last i checked, Edm was in Canada.

The only player that plays on a Canadian team is Price and Weber

No obvious omissions either. Sorry if I missed anyone but I don't think I did. Either way it's sad

It's called the Bettman effect. And it's in full force for everyone to see.

It was like 4 back in 1996. Might've had McDavid this year if the rules were different, but then again maybe not. More teams in the US, but when was the last time that wasn't the case? More talent from around the world today, so the basic number of Canadians in the league is less, and Canadian teams will have more of that other talent. Look back at the 72 Summit Series, there were 8 Canadians playing for Canadian teams. Only 3 Canadian teams back in 72, but that goes back to one of the first points.

To be honest I was never even thinking about that. It never crossed my mind. Even the Canadians that could have made the team were mostly on American teams (Subban, Letang, Seabrook). Who really could have made Team Canada on a Canadian team? I would say only McDavid and Eberle come to mind. Hall is already in New Jersey. Just off the top of my head, no Hab, Leaf, Sen, Flame or Canuck deserved it. Jet? Nope, can't see it. Only perhaps a couple of Oilers and even so where the heck does Eberle even fit in here?

It is true that in the past there was more flavour from Canadian based teams but this had a lot to do with the Montreal Canadiens being so elite. 1972 and 1976 can attest to this. In the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cup it was the Oilers. There was only 5 on the 1981 team. 4 on the 1996 team. 7 on the 2004 team although out of them only Iginla would play a pivotal role.

2 on the 2010 team. So unless you wanted to go out of your way to invite..........oh, let's see, Dion Phaneuf, then what is the complaint? Phaneuf would be the only player on a Canadian based team that was getting any sort of consideration that I can remember then.

While we're at it, just 4 on the 2014 team. Pretty much just one of them (Price) played a meaningful role. Luongo played one game, as did Subban. Hamhuis played most games and while solid was not a star on the team.

Sorry, Canadian teams just have a shortage of talent right now. No one cares about that at this moment though. Carey Price is a Hab and he was cheered loudly in the opening ceremonies today. Find another time a Hab is cheered like that in Toronto. We don't care where they play, all that matters is the crest on the front right now.

The Canadian national team also has the highest concentration of ****** bags if you look that the reputations of the players on each team.

Without the trade it would be not a single skater at all...and as it is Weber has yet to play for Montreal.
