Canada is going to steamroll this tournament for sure. It's going to be embarassing to watch Marjamäki's Finland play against this team. If those line up predictions become true that offense has to be one of the if not the most skilled in the history of the WC.

Looking forward to Team Germany handing another defeat to the Canadiens. :naughty:

The Germans won't be playing the team they saw at the olympics so I wouldn't be getting your hopes up too much if i were you.

Best to keep expectations for this low, as they should be.

A little early to make that call, there is only like 6 guys confirmed right now, who knows who fills out the rest of the roster.

Mcdavid can't do it all.

But nhl-grinders can be good option? Guys like Sizikas or Martin

Nah, no need. If all a player can bring is physicality then he might as well stay home. A third liner who brings very good defence could be useful if Canada has many refusals, but that's all. You could argue that one of those guys might bring energy, but it would have to be an experienced player who knows how to not cross the line in international hockey.

I am assuming that there will be a big announcement of names either tomorrow or Tuesday given that the season ends tonight. Something like 9 forwards, five defencemen and one or maybe two goaltenders.

whats the point with having skilled star players on the 4th line playing 5 minutes a game? give those minutes to o dell, lapierre and klinhamer and let them hit the **** out of everyone.

They usually distribute ice-team more equitably in this tournament. It's a long grind with plenty of easy games so everyone gets a good shot.

And the reason for having skilled guys over checkers: skilled guys drive possession, generate scoring chances etc. Checkers are necessary in leagues like the NHL because the salary cap limits the amount of money teams can spend on the bottom end of their rosters. Team Canada obviously doesn't have a salary cap so that's not an issue. I'd rather 'take our game to them' than fill out our roster with a bunch of minor leaguers so we can 'hit the shit out of them.' And honestly, I'm just not a big believer in the idea that hitting has a huge influence on how it forces the opposition to play. Players have gotten so good at dodging and pivoting on contact that checkers rarely make great contact. Plus, it's not like this tournament is comprised of a bunch of 7 game series where you can make it into a war of attrition. A lot of teams only play each other once. And as you said, these grinders would only play 5 minutes a night, so how much of an effect are they really going to have on a 60 minute game? You wouldn't want them out there against the opposition's best players (remember: they're minor leaguers), so who exactly are they having an effect on?

Side note: I'm happy to see Chabot get the opportunity to play. He's made huge strides this year and I wouldn't be surprised to see him play in the top 4. Remember, Canada has historically deployed a really weak D in this tournament. Last year we got Vlasic and that was considered a major get.

If Pietrangelo gets an invite and accepts there's a huge chance he's the #1 defensemen. Seeing a couple of lineups having him down the lineup. He's a top 5 defensemen.

Pietrangelo would probably be the best defenceman in the tournament, but there is almost no chance that he accepts. Parayko will hopefully be an addition from St. Louis.

Exactly, and his skating and vision are both good enough to translate to the wider ice. He's one of the best passing defensemen easily, he's gonna be a breakout machine on this ice if he can play.
All that and more he does so well, he's one of the best, top class.

What I would not give to have that guy in Montreal.

Why do you say that? Pietrangelo has taken every chance to play for Canada. We'll see, though.

Pietrangelo has refused before, though it is understandable. The reason I am ruling him out this year has already been discussed. His wife miscarried last year but she is now pregnant with triplets. Given that I doubt that he's going to go overseas for weeks.
