Nah. USA has probably 90% of the world's best players in basketball. More than half of its best team didn't bother showing up to the Olympic tournament this year, and it still won easily. USA Basketball is like Canadian hockey in the mid 1960s and before.

Team USA has five losses in Olympic history, even when our amateurs were playing Communist professionals. Three of those loses came in one tournament, 2004.

I'm just glad a Canadian didn't start this thread.. we are nowhere near that level of dominance.. just on a good run.

Whenever you name the top 20 players in the world ...in basketball usually 18-19 of them are American.. in Hockey Canada would maybe be 10 of the top 20... possibly less in some years.

If we made up a sport that nobody else ever heard of and were the only ones that played it we could completely dominate it, however.. *cough* floorball *cough*

Floorball is a fun game but maybe not so as a spectator sport.

Not quite.

Team USA Basketball has won Gold all but one time (2004).

Team Canada Hockey in Olympics went home without medals two times (1998, 2006). Sochi was the first time in the NHL Olympian era they made it through unscathed (Vancouver and Salt Lake, they actually lost a game)

Sounds like lacrosse

The core crop of guys that Canada has to send in NHL player tournaments is the best team in the world the past 4 years. With the younger generations though the U.S. will be the best it's ever been along with Canada. At U20 tournaments and below the U.S. is on par or at least close with them. But as far as this current group of 24 year old NHLers and above, it's Canada.

US had a pretty bad dry spell from 2008-2012 in terms of top prospects. Even before then our star prospects turned into Erik Johnson Jack Johnson Kyle Okposo and Blake wheeler

Some people act like Canada's WJC streak ending in 2009 signaled a downturn for Canada, but realistically Canada had a ridiculous collection of juniors up to and including the 2012 tournament. It's why the WJC is not a great predictor of future success at the top level. A lot of the time the players who aren't there act as a better predictor than who is.

I just meant in terms of drafts. The best player from 08-11 is Tyler Johnson and he wasn't drafted. We are getting some top ten talent again which is good but they still have to develop right.

pretty much.

Canada could send a B team with a few "A" players and it would win the tournament.

This could be current "B" team.

Hall - Giroux - Perry
Couture - MacKinnon - Neal
O'Reilly - Spezza - Stone
Schwartz - Scheifele - Sharp
Monahan

Giordano - Letang
Bouwmeester - Subban
Brodie - Ekblad
Barrie/Seabrook

Luongo, Jones, Fleury

Coaches: McLellan, Ruff, D.Sutter, Tippett

Yeah, I'm very confident that this team alone could comfortably win it, let alone if you add 3-5 players like Tavares, Toews, or Getzlaf.

USA Basketball could send their 'E' team and still win Gold
Well, perhaps true, but in the terms of sendind their "B" teams, US basketball and canadian hockey are similar :dunno: and no other nation in those respective sports can compare to them.

And I think about it in the way like, the US has won three olympics in a row, Canada two + this world cup (and 5 out of last 6 big hockey tournaments), or in the way of talent depth. Canada's "A" team is pretty much as impressive as US' "A" team. And the depth of talent behind those "A" team players is similar. In that department, no one comes close in hockey to Canada. No one comes close to US in basketball. But I acknowledge that the difference between US and the rest in basketball is even bigger than between Canada and the rest in hockey, but some things are similar, so the comparison for someone who isn't a hockey/basketball/sport nerd, when you say Team Canada at hockey = Team USA at basketball, that's pretty accurate. Of course the US is dominating more overall. But Canada (men+women) is quite comparable, even if not the same.

The US has sent an equivalent of a B/U24 team to two world cups and lost zero games. The last World Cup off the top of my head I think they won each game by an average of 25 points.

Funny enough the "A" team has been played closer.

In no parallel universe is Canada's hockey depth or top end talent as good as the US in basketball.

Canada in an era of dominance!

What do you think?

If you would listing to the hype then yes, in reality they are not much better than the other top teams. But canada in hockey probably beats everything in this world in creating hype around themself, and some buy it.

The fact is still that canada goes very much up and down in whc, they have won 2 years in a row now, but how did it go before that? In the best on best torunament, there has only been 2 tournaments that can be seen as neutral and fair, and that is olympics 98 and 96. No medals for canada there at all. Canada do not dominated the sport and are certantly not at USA as level in basketball. You can not count victories like wordl cup, since you give you self a lot of benifits there like, NHL refs, home ice, and controlling all the rules. Is that really something to be proud over? it is compareable with using doping.

Canada is maybe still the best team, but in no way dominating the sport, it is even among the top teams and among the top teams anyone can with against anyone. That is not really the case in basketball.

Actually yes it is at this very moment. Canada is in a class of their own in hockey and have no challengers on any level. We are just that good I'm afraid! :D Just like America is in a class of their own in basketball and have no real rivals as well. However other countries are beginning to emerge some great talent and one day the USA will face more stiffer competition on the world stage in BBall. But we are comparing apples to oranges and this debate is pointless.

If anything it seems world basketball has regressed. Spain is aging out. Argentina is mediocre at best. France is decidedly average.
