Nah. USA has probably 90% of the world's best players in basketball. More than half of its best team didn't bother showing up to the Olympic tournament this year, and it still won easily. USA Basketball is like Canadian hockey in the mid 1960s and before.
I'm just glad a Canadian didn't start this thread.. we are nowhere near that level of dominance.. just on a good run.
Whenever you name the top 20 players in the world ...in basketball usually 18-19 of them are American.. in Hockey Canada would maybe be 10 of the top 20... possibly less in some years.
If we made up a sport that nobody else ever heard of and were the only ones that played it we could completely dominate it, however.. *cough* floorball *cough*

The core crop of guys that Canada has to send in NHL player tournaments is the best team in the world the past 4 years. With the younger generations though the U.S. will be the best it's ever been along with Canada. At U20 tournaments and below the U.S. is on par or at least close with them. But as far as this current group of 24 year old NHLers and above, it's Canada.
US had a pretty bad dry spell from 2008-2012 in terms of top prospects. Even before then our star prospects turned into Erik Johnson Jack Johnson Kyle Okposo and Blake wheeler
Some people act like Canada's WJC streak ending in 2009 signaled a downturn for Canada, but realistically Canada had a ridiculous collection of juniors up to and including the 2012 tournament. It's why the WJC is not a great predictor of future success at the top level. A lot of the time the players who aren't there act as a better predictor than who is.
pretty much.
Canada could send a B team with a few "A" players and it would win the tournament.
Well, perhaps true, but in the terms of sendind their "B" teams, US basketball and canadian hockey are similarUSA Basketball could send their 'E' team and still win Gold

And I think about it in the way like, the US has won three olympics in a row, Canada two + this world cup (and 5 out of last 6 big hockey tournaments), or in the way of talent depth. Canada's "A" team is pretty much as impressive as US' "A" team. And the depth of talent behind those "A" team players is similar. In that department, no one comes close in hockey to Canada. No one comes close to US in basketball.
that's impressive. The US has sent an equivalent of a B/U24 team to two world cups and lost zero games. The last World Cup off the top of my head I think they won each game by an average of 25 points.
Funny enough the "A" team has been played closer.
Well, perhaps true, but in the terms of sendind their "B" teams, US basketball and canadian hockey are similarand no other nation in those respective sports can compare to them.

But I acknowledge that the difference between US and the rest in basketball is even bigger than between Canada and the rest in hockey, but some things are similar, so the comparison for someone who isn't a hockey/basketball/sport nerd, when you say Team Canada at hockey = Team USA at basketball, that's pretty accurate. Of course the US is dominating more overall. But Canada (men+women) is quite comparable, even if not the same.

In no parallel universe is Canada's hockey depth or top end talent as good as the US in basketball.
Actually yes it is at this very moment. Canada is in a class of their own in hockey and have no challengers on any level. We are just that good I'm afraid!Just like America is in a class of their own in basketball and have no real rivals as well. However other countries are beginning to emerge some great talent and one day the USA will face more stiffer competition on the world stage in BBall. But we are comparing apples to oranges and this debate is pointless.
