surprise surprise...ron maclean would suggest that huh? why doesnt the USA send 10 teams to the olyimpics and just make it a fantasy tournament......we get it canada is good at , but as soon as BOTH teams are out or canada doesnt medal what do you think guys like maclean will be crying for?

What chance do you think there is that when having Team Canada "A" (ie the best possible team) and Team Canada "B" (the second best canadian team), one would win the tournament? In other words, do you think a chance for Canada is higher when having just A team, or when having A team AND B team? (where A is the classic best, the B team is simply a B team, the worse one)

Of course I LOVE this idea since its the same idea I posted in the other thread....

I loved the current format, but would like to see 2 more teams added so there are more round robin games. Here's what I would like to see for the next tournament...

Canada A
Canada B (they are good enough to be in the tournament so why not?)
USA
NA youngsters
Sweden
Russia
Finland
Europe combined (adds Czech)

Also would add a rule whereby you can play for Canada or USA if you 23 or under if you already played on team NA in this tournament.

For those saying its stupid to have to Canada teams I say why not? There's plenty of international spots where more than one team represents a country. Would be cool to see if canada could get two teams to the medal round or if Canada2 could ever beat Canada1.

Would have to be the "C" team. Technically the refs already fill the role of Team Canada's B team.

Bolded = the easiest way to spot a Canadian in this part of the forum...

The best for the World Cup would be to make it a US vs Canada thing. Bring 4 Canadian teams, 4 US teams, everyone over there is happy. Oh also change the name to something like America's Hockey Cup. It would be most relevant to the supposed audience (= North America).

I've also created a Canada B team in the NHL video game, but for the World Cup this is bullcrap for one simple reason: when (not if) players from Canada A get injured, where do you get the replacement from? Can you "call up" players from Canada B at will and then Canada B has to get a free player (i.e. one that isn't on either team) as replacement-replacement?
Had Canada B already existed this year, Perry, JBo, Couture and O'Reilly would've been there. Could Team A still call them up? Or would they need to invite a third-string player, one that neither made Team A nor Team B (so maybe like a Justin Williams or a Jordan Staal)?
Are these two independent teams anyway, or is B like the farm team of A?
What if a player from A and a player from B get hurt at the same time and both teams want the same replacement? To which team does he go?
What if Player X plays a pre-tournament game for Team B, then a player from A gets hurt, and they want X as replacement? Can he simply switch teams before the tournament?

This is a video game idea.

I agree. As a European hockey fan I feel kinda insulted that there even are Euro teams in this tournament when the North American audience only cares about team NA and people are talking about getting a second team for Canada. And the fact that this tournament is always held in North America, with a small rink and with NHL referees doesn't help. Why not pull the Europeans out of this when this event is clearly for the Canadians and Americans only and then have as many teams for each country as they please. The fact that they want to replace Olympics with this "World Cup" is infuriating.

Had to make an account to let some of this frustration out. :shakehead

Isn't it just easier to not include Canada in future World Cups and just let the other teams fight fot the spot as #2 in the world.

If you made this tournament even more gimmicky it should also become 100% optional to participate for players.

Having Canada B and Canada C teams would be an efficient way destroying the sport, at least for national tournaments.

It would be like having 20 Norwegian Nordic skiers during Olympic games or world championships winning all the medals.

Yes I love the Canada (hockey) and Norwegian (Nordic skiing) comparison, it's very close. Two countries absolutely obsessed by one sport, almost a bit religious or at least extremely deep cultural wise inside the souls and minds of the people since they were born.

We all know Canada is best in hockey, nothing you have to prove.

Exactly.

why settle for only 2, why not a team for each province and call it the Canada cup

It should have been like this from the get go. Calling it WORLD Cup and then proceeding to not make it open to only nations, is a complete fail. Apparently the "world" is made of a handful of nations.

Call it Canada Cup or the NHL Cup and then they can do whatever they want, make all the gimmick teams they want. Oh and by the way, leave the Olympics alone, as in this tournament and the Olympics shouldn't be somehow in competition.

If you made this tournament even more gimmicky it should also become 100% optional to participate for players.

With both the NHL and the NHLPA benefitting financially, it will never be optional for players to participate.

Would that be such a bad idea? No can argue then that this is an actual international/national tournament - guess o canada being played twiced, eh - so you have the owners cash grab and the OG for the fans and the players. What I am surprised over is that the NHL is so willing to piss off their NA core fans, the majority of which want players at the OG. I do wonder, the next time the olympics is in north america, if the NHL will change and hey presto suddenly the NHL players are back in.

Not to mention that the NHL are apparently very interested in expanding to China, or at least capture the Chinese viewing audience, and the 2022 olympics is the perfect showcase. Hockey is a growing sport in China and having the best of the best playing will only increase interest.

The NBA have been very smart and now China is the biggest market audience outside of the US and growing rapidly. Maybe NHL should look to emulate the NBA.

Interesting article:

The Olympics

Internationalization is a slow process, and to develop a patriotic passion towards anything across cultures that is not already ingrained into local tradition can seem incredibly daunting, if not impossible. But what if you could use something that is already a part of a community, or hundreds of communities, to leverage something that is not?

International NBA Players

At the beginning of the 90s, the NBA set out on an internationalization project (only 21 internationals in the NBA at the time) with the intent of connecting with non-American sports markets, and their entry point: the 1992 Olympic Games. This was a huge success. As the “Dream Team,†compiled of NBA all-stars, went over to Barcelona, the US walked away securing the gold medals and having established a very captivating NBA presence among many nations. This was only the start of what has now led to fourteen worldwide NBA offices and a massive London headquarter that broadcasts to 118 countries in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Now, with another summer Olympics coming up in 2016, there are high hopes of further expanding influence as many countries will be represented by players who come out of the NBA.

https://businesssideofsports.com/2015/12/22/nba-globalization-a-three-pronged-strategy/

The NHL already have the international players, so they are already one up on the NBA and with hockey the national sport in two countries, Canada and Finland, as well as being very popular in other European countries. But the NHL have been lousy at capitalizing and expanding hockey into non-traditional markets. There is a reason that NBA franchises sell for double or triple the price of NHL franchises. Hockey will never reach the global appeal that basketball has, but they should at least maximize worldwide viewership. Unless they are content with being a fringe sport in the US and the national sport in Canada.

USA should not lose their U24 players. They should just pick an A Team and B Team and then leave the gritty A Team at home...

(McDavid will still be young enough to play for North America if there is one, that said, he does want to play for team Canada)
I was very pleased to hear McDavid say that, and if they are going to keep this gimmick for future tourneys (which I fear they will) it should only be players who wouldn't be picked for their countries main roster.

By 2020, Connor McDavid will have 5 years of NHL experience and likely be recognized as clearly the best hockey player in the world. It would be kind of silly to put him on a "future stars" team.

Not Canada A and Canada B but they could do kind of a draft...

Team Canada Red selects Sidney Crosby
Team Canada White selects Connor McDavid
Team Canada Red selects Jonathan Toews
Team Canada White selects John Tavares

And so on... the entertainment behind that kind of draft would be huge!

I think this situation compares very neatly to the norweigan domination of skiing as has been stated. It is already hurtful to the sport to see such domination from one nation. To have two Canada teams would certainly kill off interest in european countries. Having say the czechs losing 0-5 to Canada B is just bad optics.

Also the rivalry between Canada A and B would be rather lackluster if you don't go by geographical division, like Canada East vs Canada West.

Obviously the best format would feature team Canada Offence and team Canada Defence

O

Hall Crosby Eberle
Benn Tavares Seguin
Neal Getzlaf Perry
Duchene McDavid Stamkos
Johansen

Giordano Burns
Brodie Letang
Keith Subban
Barrie

Holtby
Crawford
Fleury

D

Couture Toews Carter
Marchand Bergeron Stone
O’Reilly Giroux Simmonds
Schwartz Thornton Henrique
Couturier

Vlasic Weber
Muzzin Doughty
Tanev Pietrangelo
Seabrook

Price
Luongo
Jones

If there are two Team Canada rosters at the next event, they need to draft them, not have Canada A and Canada Leftovers.

Flip a coin to see who drafts first, I'd guess the first three picked are Price, Crosby and Doughty.
