If there is a World Cup in feb 2024 what would your team Canada look like?

Scheifele-mcdavid-Stone
Huberdeau-MacKinnon-point
Kyrou-Bedard-marner
Couturier-Crosby-stamkos

makar-Toews
Theodore- power
Ekblad-chabot

So with the NHL in talks for a 2024 World Cup, my feeling is it will look different than the 2022 version, which would have been loaded. Still will for 2024, but with two and a half years away you have to predict it and be creative about it. Here goes:

Coach: Jon Cooper

Huberdeau-McDavid-Point
Lafreniere-Mackinnon-Stamkos
Marchand-Crosby-Wilson
Couturier-O'Reilly-Scheifele
Bedard

Rielly-Makar
Theodore-Pietrangelo
Nurse-Ekblad
Drysdale-Power

Hart
Binnington
Price (wild card, x factor)

Crazy right? Yeah, I know. Hey, there were plenty of people who thought Rico Fata would be on the 2002 Olympic team, so it is what it is. I remember saying Eric Brewer years ago would be on that team, and he was. I am taking a huge flyer on Lafreniere. Maybe it is just a hunch, but there was no Alexandre Daigle feeling I have ever had with him that he is a bust. Joe Thornton had a first couple of troubled years too. That worked out. I don't know, he has two and a half years to turn it around. Part of it is I need a natural left winger on there, but I think it is possible he's on there. Bedard is just the wild card. He will have finished his rookie season by then. But that goal he scored the other night, my goodness! I just love the kid. I didn't know what else to do with Stamkos, so I put him on the 2nd line because I think he'll still be pretty quick by then. Yeah that's Tom Wilson on Crosby's line. Hey, we need some sandpaper too, and it will be on NHL ice. Imagine the room Marchand and Wilson will give a 37 year old Crosby, who will still be good, I think. The last line is a checking line, but one that can score.

No shocks on defense. Power and Drysdale are the "we'll see" types.

Cooper is a good choice for coach, as Tampa will still be good and he was supposed to be the coach this year too.

In net it gets hairy. Fleury is gone by then, I think. But either way he is almost 40 by then. Price will be 37, and will all of his injuries maybe not even in the NHL. That leaves a lot of pressure on Hart to be an elite goalie. Binnington has won before, so that works. Blackwood is the other option, and maybe not a bad one.

I don’t even care what rosters any team ices for this irreverent tournament. Sorry to hijack your thread.

They could have Ontario vs Chelyabinsk vs Michigan U23 for all I care

On a whim

Huberdeau - McDavid - Point
Stamkos - MacKinnon - Marner
Marchand - Crosby - Stone
Dubois - O'Reilly - Batherson
Kyrou

HM/bubble forwards: Scheifele, Couturier, Wilson, Kadri, Suzuki, Tavares, Duchene, Bertuzzi (plenty more I could list)

Theodore - Pietrangelo
D. Toews - Makar
Pelech - Ekblad
Chabot/Rielly (interchangable)

HM/bubble defensemen: Drysdale, Nurse, Morrissey, Doughty, Parayko, Hamilton, Girard

Jarry
Hart
Blackwood/Kuemper/Binnington (interchangable)

A lot can change in 2 years, some players will be older and newer, younger and faster Canadian players will be improved so much by then or just entering the league. Forwards can change a lot between now and then, especially with guys like Lafreniere, Wright, Bedard, Byfield, McTavish, Perfetti, Dach, Jarvis, Johnson etc. On defense guys like Power, Dobson, Byram (provided he recovers from his concussions), maybe even guys like Clarke, Zellweger, Lambos, Spence, and more can make noise by then. Goaltending is a crapshoot, a lot could change by then but there's really not a lot in the pipeline for now, but Jarry is the leading candidate to be the starter by then.

I actually predicted someone would make a team Canada best on best roster thread while team Canada was actively playing at the Olympics. Why cheer for your nations athletes at the Olympics when you can discuss tournaments that aren't even official 2 years from now!

Hopefully a team Canada B best on best thread after this as well.

Yes, idiots preferring to discuss a potential best on best instead of a glorified Spengler Cup! Why can't you fans be happy with David Desharnais and Eddie Pasquale!

Yes discussing a potential tournament 2 years from now is imminent. Team B as well!

If you are Canadian.. cheering for Pasquale and Desharnais at the Olympics would make sense since they are representing your country. Just like the bobsledders, figure skaters and all your athletes.

OP (and the rest of the country) can cheer them on AND also be excited for a best on best. Not mutually exclusive...

I don't think we will see Bedard already in two years, but if anyone can pull it off it's him. Would be fun to see it.

Immediate thoughts is that goaltending is ugly. Also, no Nurse.
Yeah it's really bad. Anyone of the guys we have now could fall off a cliff. Guys like Hart and Blackwood are constantly shelled every night and don't have good outings. Guys like Cossa or Levi aren't going to be stars, and they're still going to be developing (which could literally have any outcome for goalies).

Canada is good enough to overcome average goaltending but it's definitely a down period.

What about Tristan Jarry?

LOL. I cringed when I saw this thread.

8 years in between best on best tournaments, that's a lot. Like someone said, we are witnessing a Spengler Cup more or less without the best players. Not fun. We have missed a lot of players that we should have seen. Imagine Crosby and McDavid in 2018. So it is understandable to have a thirst for the best on best.

????? McDavid Point
Huberdeau MacKinnon Kyrou
Dubois Crosby Batherson
Barzal Couturier Stone
Marner, Bedard

Pelech Makar
Chabot Ekblad
Theodore Pietrangelo
Drysdale, Rielly

Hart
Jarry
Levi

The goaltending situation really is unacceptable. The high forward picks from recent drafts are also disappointing, though some of them may turn it around. Canada could really use a goal scorer or two on the wing going forward.

Ah yes, love to see three superstar #1 picks playing together

It is just a hunch that somewhere Lafreniere picks up the slack. It did take Thornton a while too. By season 3 and especially 4 he had put the league on notice. Year 5 he was considered the best player not on the Canadian Olympic team in 2002. So we'll see with Lafreniere.
