The main candidates would be Solberg, Jiricek or Connelly you'd think. Connelly perhaps is the skilled upside play but is, alas, a winger (currently a rather light one) and one I'd tend to not talk myself into.

Jiricek could perhaps earn the benefit of the doubt given time missed but I'd still need to dissect his first half league tape to buy in. On the surface and according to everything I've read it wasn't great. His Hlinka play was but just against his peers and even then the offense wasn't amazing.

Solberg amassed high level competition late in the season at the Worlds and has quite the physical rep already. I'm more of a WYSIWYG type evaluator and prefer more mature, well-rounded, reliable players. If that makes them perceived as lower ceiling or unsexy by some so be it. Overall the Caps also need more all-situations players. They need upside, sure, but Solberg does have it if he pops in some crucial ways. A physical, cerebral potential minute-eater LD offers considerable value. I'll be really interested where he lands on Bob's final list.

Agreed with Solberg. Dont see him knocking at the NHL-gates in couple of years, but I like his upside most of this list.

Bummed to see all the other ones i like (Eiserman, Sennecke, Hage) going right before our pick in this mock :)

Want to avoid the drama with Connelly. One name that could be a suprise pick and is missing on this list is Stiga. Id pick him over many names of this given list. This is the year that upside should overweight risks for us, just take a swing. We need top6/top4 talent going forward.

If this is how the draft plays out I’d be considering Boisvert, Chernysov, Connelly, Greentree, Jiricek, or Solberg. Nobody I really feel strongly about to be honest, most of the guys I hoped would fall are gone. I don’t have an answer yet, I’ll think about it :help:

As someone who is hoping Solberg will fall IRL, this one is easy for me. The Caps have nobody that has 1D ceiling post-Carlson.

With most of the clear talent gone at this stage I’d take the high motor players: Luchanko or Surin. Solberg is interesting but haven’t seen much of him

EP puts out their draft guide Monday. I'm going to wait until then to dig into the options here.

After perusing this, I would have gone with Greentree here.

Connolly is graded slightly ahead, but they do have completely different profiles. Connolly has the edge in speed and skill, whereas Greentree is bigger, more physical, and much better defensively.

In a vacuum, with no character issues, Connolly might have a slight edge. But since that's not the world we live in. I'd take Greentree and it wouldn't even be close.

I'd take any of the forwards projected in the first round over Connolly.

Some ppl have Iginla top 5 (#5).
I've seen that, too. I'm not sure I'd put him that high, but that's because I'd probably have some D ahead of him. He's looking like a top 5 forward in this draft, for sure.

I don't know if this is considered a "good" year for D, but I really like the ones that I've looked at.

Pronman thinks it’s a “good” year for D. He says that all 5 of his top D-men are better ranked than the 2 taken in top 10 last year (at #5 & #6).

So there is that.

Not surprising. The top 5 D here look like total studs.
