He's been great recently with Vasy playing like crap. He's been serviceable and provides some good stability. But like the other poster said, wouldn't want him starting in the playoffs.

Yeah, but I feel like we made that bed when we paid Vasy franchise money. Which I'm good with, btw. I just mean, if you're giving a goalie 9.5, there's not enough left to be okay with whoever the back up is in a big game.

Yeah. When you commit that kind of money, that guy is your ride or die. Doesn't leave a lot of room for an expensive backup.

So you either have to roll with a serviceable but not super confidence-inspiring veteran like Elliott, or you've gotta find a way to "draft and develop". Which is tricky, because it's a big jump to the NHL and when you have a guy like Vasy playing all those games, it's hard for a new guy to get in those "developmental games" in to find their footing. Young goalies making the jump tend to need some rope to run with and sort out some of the ups/downs as they go. Which is hard to do when it's so firmly Vasy's net.

So that pretty much leaves you picking through guys like McBackup, Elliott, et al. Which is fine, as long as Vasy stays healthy.

Yup. And realistically, Vasy could be the #1 for another decade. Even if/when his game falls off, he will have earned the right to get a few more shots to prove he can still cut it.

But yeah, there's no money for a real insurance goalie. We just have to hope somebody can play above their pay in the regular season and then try our best to draft and develop in the meantime. If Vasy goes down in the playoffs, we're fxxxed no matter what, so we might as well cheap out on the back-up.

Plus, by the time Vasilevsky is starting to get up there in age, that will naturally open up a little bit more room for a young backup to try to break in. At some point, you're going to have to start scaling back Vasy's workload. That opens the door. Whenever that time comes.
