I mean he can’t be slower than Kadri, can he? Also he has never worked under our skating staff which is very well known. He would be just fine. He won’t be the fastest guy out there but we don’t need him to be fast.

We need Tavares to provide franchise esque offense and he would do just that. Let’s just be happy to have a PPG franchise centre for free. Woooohooooo!

If you watch his highlights, he plays in some dirty areas where foot speed doesn't play a factor. He seems to like to play in close to the net and around it. This will mesh well with the wingers we have who can get the puck to those areas.

I think by now my posts should make clear I'm neither emotional or confrontational, I am only speaking from experience having watched him for almost 10 years.

He WILL make the TML a much better team, but he has liabilities that will accentuate the leafs' defensive deficiencies. The NYI had the worst D and goaltending in the league, but if you watched most of the Isles' games last year you'd have seen what I'm referring to.

Thank you for being so brave during all of this.

He's been working with skating coaches his whole life. This is not a new weakness and something he's always tried to improve. Underhill isn't going to do much, if anything, for him.

The good news is that this isn't new and he clearly knows how to handle himself without elite skating.

Now wouldn't be the best time to poll NYI fans for an unbiased opinion on John Tavares.
I actually find the day after losing a player is the time when a fan is least biased about a player. They've usually done a decade of ignoring a players flaws... and then on that one magical day, they actually see everything pretty objectively.

That being said, I'm not worried. He has a much better supporting cast around him than any time with the Islanders.

Hope he breaks out the stache look at some point

The best all around defensive team I have seen in many years was Team Canada at the Sochi Olympics of 2014. Mike Babcock was the coach of that team. Babcock had the task of selecting a team from a huge range of worthy candidates. The single deepest position was probably centre. Babcock didn’t simpky select top scorers. He wanted pkayers who were defensively sound and at least solid skaters. Tavares made the team. They might have checked with Babcock about Tavares, n’est-ce pas?

Edit: Tavares was the second youngest player on the team

JVR wasn't the fastest skater and he managed alright.

I'm thinking a Hyman-Tavares-Marner line could be dangerous.

Tavares can play in his spot in close to the net. Having Marner would prevent the opposition from collapsing on JT leaving him a little more room. Plus you have an outlet to kick the puck back to. Having Hyman, would give you someone that can win puck battles and get the puck either out front to Tavares or out to Marner. You'd have three excellent puck possession guys too, who can spread out. They would drive oppositions crazy.

So because Team Canada was good on D so will the Leafs? Subban was their 7D lol c’mon. We still need size/mobility back there. Ideally a scoring PP QB as well to give more space to our F on the wall but that’s nowhere near as big a need.

Tavares isn't going to be a speed demon, but I actually think this is a good thing. He adds ingredients that allows us to throw out a 1A/1B line that isn't going for a quick strike but can initiate a cycle game down low a la Crosby. Throw him out there with Hyman to grind more. Or add Marner to his wing for a more cerebral attack. Or if you need a goal late, maybe throw him out there on Matthews wing to make things truly interesting.

it's not like Tavares once was a great skater but isn't going to have that anymore. he's always been mediocre (or even worse before he was drafted) but his terrific IQ, strength on the puck, hands, and work ethic have always been enough to turn him into a star player and make the players around him better. he doesn't have to be McDavid fast to be a force for us.

This guy hands down, is the hardest working man in NHL history.

He will make Sundin, look like the ugly part timer he was.

I guess it’s a good thing. Slowing down the game is a real problem with this squad they are all run and gun or burn kind of players. Different mentality would be very helpful to win the cup. You need a perfect mixture and he will provide that IMO.
