FOR FUN!

Which line would you rather have on your team? Assume everyone is at their best, and disregard injury concerns.

Tatar is faster and scores more than Pearson, but Pearson is bigger and better in the playoffs while still potting around 20G. Danault vs Monahan should go to the latter, but by how much might be the question, not to mention overall chemistry. Gallagher against himself is a wash of course.

Monahan - 692GP 224G 265A 489P
Danault - 564GP 103G 208A 311P

Tatar - 792GP 211G 248A 459P
Pearson - 601GP 136G 142A 278P

Bonus Q - Replace Tatar with Pearson on recent Habs playoff runs, how do they do?

Bonus Q #2 - Same question but Monahan for Danault (with Tatar no Pearson)

Prime Monahan and Pearson would probably edge prime Danault and Tatar. But current Gallagher, Monahan, and Pearson get edged by the prime Gallager, Danault, and Tatar that we got to see. They were fun to watch. Not the highest talent or biggest line in the league. But always gave it their all, and were highly effective.

Though if you look at moneypuck.com ,

Pearson-Monahan-Gallagher

is the best offensive Habs line this season. Not sure how broken/reliable is moneypuck though.

A 30 goal, 84 point center is hard to beat if the decline of Gallagher is not taken into account.

It's advanced stats using the data from the NHL, so as reliable as it can be. It should also have the actual goals for/against on it if you don't like advanced stats.

I’ll take Danault and the other ones can stay home.

Ironically, Danault and Kotkaniemi were the perfect Marc Bergevin style centers. And he let one go for nothing and traded the other along with an early 2nd for Dvorak and a late 3rd.

You can't make this stuff up.

Assuming everyone is in their prime Monahan is the only real first liner in either group.
Off topic, but you gotta feel for Calgary.

Losing prime Monahan, Tkachuk and Gaudreau and only replacing them with Huburdeau and Weegar was a massive, massive loss.

I understand things(injuries and trade demands ) were out of their control but still, not many teams can recover from that

Nowhere land
Monahan is in a different range of price. We have him for cheap money because of his history injuries. Monahan in his prime is a notch under players such as Tavares, 1rst line material. Danault doesn't pretend to be 1rst line material. He's a defensive specialist and one of the best in the NHL. He made produce Tatar and Gallagher and it could have been different linemates. He did well in LA with Moore, Arvidsson and Iafallo. Or it can be any player. His salary range is 5,5 M and he's never injured.

Beat me to it….most underrated line in hockey during those 3 years. Really clicked well on the forecheck. But individually only Danault was worth the 6M in retrospect.
Yeah, was really a case of the whole being (a lot) better, somewhat, than the sum of the parts, as I often say.

Obviously that's also just 5v5; There's definitely discussions to be had regarding special units. Maybe Pearson-Money-Gally work together on the PP, although Tatar himself was also pretty decent. Danault didn't play the PP much. Monahan in his "offensive peak" was an absolute defense liabilit so doubt he'd replace Danault on the PK, etc.

If it's pure "peak" level, then the Monahan line wins hands down...

Pearson & Tatar are a wash... Tatar the slightly better scorer in his prime but Pearson a grittier & better playoff performer.

I don't think Habs fans quite appreciate just how good Monahan was at his short lived peak.

Oh I know he's the best of the bunch, but I just thought the chemistry of Tatar and Danault with gallagher might actually make an argument

Yeah, no doubt that Tatar/Danault/Gally was a line that performed above the simple sum of the parts...

Considering the players are in their prime and ignoring injuries i'm baffled anyone would chose a line with Tatar on it. You'll win more games in playoffs with Pearson-Monahan and Gallagher providing they are all in their prime and fully healthy.

At their best, monahan is the best player of the bunch, and it's in the most important position. Tatar would be the the best winger followed by Gallagher and then Pearson.

Thats a tough one, but I'll go with the monahan option since he's the best player out of the bunch.

The KK trade still isn’t finished and tbd. He’s had a good start but I’d bet my house he comes nowhere near 60 points this year or ever.

Danault shut down huge players which are as good as scoring goals. That’s how I looked at it. Monahan is still much better though at any age but I’m pretty sure that Danault line was one of the best 5v5 lines in the whole league
