Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to tonight's voyage of the TankTown Express. After three horrible, disgusting, abysmal, sack of shit, losing efforts the Blues get Saad and Buchnevich back as we go against another Bottom feeder in Vancouver. Will we continue to be God f***ing awful? Is a top 7 pick actually possible? Will Gohan finally beat Perfect Cell? Find out tonight on DragonBallZ! Oh wait, lost my train of thought there. I meant St. Louis Blues hockey.

Damnit that lineup looks much better and the Canucks are even better at Operation: Suck-cess than we are. Gonna need Binny to implode tonight methinks.

Why does our defensive group look good defensively (at least on paper).
Because our defense is best when our forwards are back checking and plugging up the zone. Right now, our defense typically only sees the names on the jerseys far too often. As my coach used to yell at our forwards..."backcheck and buy back the space". Blues don't do that anymore.

The Blues are in an identity crisis. They aren't a speed rush team, and they aren't a heavy defensive first team. They are kind of stuck in "meh land" where they aren't good at either. Hopefully over the next 2 or 3 seasons they decide what their identity is going to be going forward. The current plan isn't working

Translation: whether we win or lose we better f***ing compete as if we want to win.

Slap that C on his chest

I don't understand the pass that Schenn gets for disappearing as often as he does. It's great that he says we need to compete and have pride, etc. He sure as hell hasn't played like that in the last 3 games though.

In this 3 game team clown show, he has 2 shots, zero points, got bullied at the dot in 2 of 3 games, and went -3. The other highly paid players are getting blasted for not carrying this garbage roster, but he gets a pass and then praised for just saying we need to work hard? It would be one thing is this was an isolated incident, but he has a long history of disappearing for long stretches.

He had a 10 game stretch in January where he had 4 points and went -12. He had a 5 game pointless streak in December where he went -8. He had an 7 game pointless streak in 2021/22 where he went -4 and an 8 game pointless streak in 2020/21 where he went -8. There are multiple other 5 game stretches where he manages a single point to go along with a hefty minus.

He goes through long stretches of nonexistent production paired with spotty defensive play where he looks completely disinterested until he starts chasing hits and occasionally looks for a fight to try and jump start his game.

He has the worst actual +/- and expected +/- among all Blues forwards and his possession numbers are lagging behind most of the top 6. He doesn't get quite the offensive deployment of Thomas and he's noticeably below Kyrou in that regard, but he's still at 53% O Zone starts at even strength. It's not like he's been asked to be the shutdown center. I don't think he's prone to the same dangerous O zone passes that Thomas and Kyrou are, but he's noticeably worse at stripping pucks off guys, he gets lost in the D zone often and he's just as prone to the lazy back check (or jumping off for a change in lieu of backchecking) as anyone on the team. I think the stats look worse than he is defensively, but he's not a great defender yet he's basically never called out for it.

I really don't want this to come off like I'm being overly critical of Schenn. Tons of guys go through droughts and I like his style of play a lot. He's very good at handling the media and form the outside looking in he seems like a leader. However, pretty much every other player on this team gets crap when they slump except for Schenn who we laud as still putting the work in despite getting zero results.

I don't want to criticize Schenn and I really don't think we should take away anything from our 4-5 NHL forwards looking like shit since the ROR trade. I think the Buch and Saad injuries put them in an overwhelming position to fail. Again, I don't want this to come off as being too critical of Schenn, but I don't think him talking about working hard tells me anything either.

Edit: @Linkens Mastery I hope this doesn't sound like I'm singling out your comment since I quoted it. The lack of ire toward Schenn has been kicking around my brain for a while now and your comment was good jumping off point for my post.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm not really going to have much criticism of the team down the stretch, we know the roster is going to be half NHL guys and half AHL/washed up guys. But, everything from the start up to the trades of Tarasenko/ROR, is completely fair game, and Schenn probably didn't get enough criticism for his part. He and Faulk are kind of similar in that, where they definitely feel like leaders of the team, and are good with the media, but they somehow escape fan criticism that other players on the team receive.

It's nice to have two average or better defenders in the top 4.
I agree. Having 4 defenseman that can old their weight defensively is great, and should hopefully lessen the load on Parayko.

Another good thing is that since Bortuzzo isn't great at transitioning, Tucker isn't bad at it so those two might be able to make a pretty decent 3rd pair.

It’s funny we collectively develop narratives and guys either end up on “hard worker and leader“ Schenn/Faulk side or “soft and lazy” Kyrou/Parayko side. But as you and Brian point out, it’s misleading. It’s almost like physical play isn’t a good indicator of effort or leadership, it’s just a good indicator of whether you are physical player. The only clear indicator of whether you truly are worthless and don’t give a crap is whether you are Logan brown.

I'm still laughing at our record with Brown in the lineup. I know it's terrible logic, but our record without him in the lineup would have us at a 99.57 point pace for the year, we have a 25-16-1 record without Brown in the lineup.

God damn, bring back Sanford.

Too late. He doesn’t play brown role as well as brown. I want to see brown playing top 6 minutes rest of year.

Their record sucks with him in the lineup mostly because if he's in the lineup, you know we're missing some important pieces. He's not going in unless something is very wrong. It's not really his fault.

That said, it's pretty clear that Logan Brown doesn't have what it takes to be an NHL regular. Can you slot him on the 4th line and not have him look completely out of place? Sure, maybe... but he's not going to suddenly turn into a player who can make any sort of positive impact above any other replacement level interchangeable player. (Sadly... because I was really rooting for the guy.)

Right, that's why I said it's bad logic. The record is just funny, and that's really the only takeaway from it.

I can always tell when Schenn is about to go on one of his cold streaks. It's when he starts pulling up on the half wall with the puck when entering the offensive zone. When he's driving the net, with or without the puck, he's a really solid player and that leads to a ton of his production. However, he's not the most gifted skater/puck handler/offensive player, and that pulling up nonsense ends up going nowhere 100% of the time.

Watch for it over the next couple of weeks - the times he carries the puck into the zone then pulls up on the half wall only to get knocked over, fall down, make a terrible pass to no one....but the end result is the same, a loss of possession and the puck going the other way.

I was at the Colorado game the other day and the Blues started the power play with Brown (and I can't 100% recall) some combo of Toropchenko, Leivo and/or Neighbors and I turned to my son and said... "We're probably watching the worst powerplay forward line in the entire NHL right now..."
