Tacki Mac Command Grips or Tape?

Anyone have thoughts on the Tacki Mack Command grips versus tape? I am pondering on giving it a shot and just wondering what are some people's thoughts.

I've used the Tacki-Macs and personally they're way too thick for me. It both made the grip too big and deadened the feeling of the puck a bit. I do know they came out with thinner ones though and I imagine those are an improvement.

If you're willing to buy one just to try it I'd say give the Tacki-Mac a shot and decide for yourself. The grip on your stick is always completely personal preference.

(I switched to using SportsTape Guaze tape exclusively. Tacky and thin but without the goop from tape to ruin your glove palms.)

I've used a variety of grips (standard cloth tape, cohesive gauze tape, and tackimac grips), and personally I like tackimacs the best. My favourite is the 7" "sand" grip, it's pretty thin, and has a nice grippy texture. The "wrapped" grip is a bit thicker, with a less grippy texture, I don't like it as much (have tried both). The only issue I have is that knob is too long for me, it comes with a roughly 3/4" knob, so I just cut it down to the size I prefer (more like 1/4") with an xacto knife.

I like tackimacs for a number of reasons:
- just like how the grip feels in my top hand
- last ages, unlike those cohesive gauze tapes that wear out pretty quick
- really easy on the palms of my gloves

May or may not be for you, it basically all comes down to what kind of feel you personally like on that top hand, but worth trying IMO.

same...i use tennis raquet wrap now...you have to try it out if you like that self stick guaze...its like $4 for 2 rolls (each roll with mostlikey get you 2 wraps)...they last forever, are "tacki", and i dont have to replace my gloves every 2mos. now...i think its the "over wrap" that i use, but its just the really thin stuff and not those wraps with the foam stuff to make it thicker

I use Tacki Mac Wrapped Texture grip. I like them. I don't notice it being any thicker than tape. They are alot easier on the palms of my gloves than tape.

my preference is tape and some grip tape from any local hockey store. way better than any tacki grips

It's a matter of personal opinion, that's what I used to use, but I got tired of constantly having to replace the grip tape (tried Renfrew, 3M and Andover grip/cohesive tapes, all wore out really fast). The Tacki-Mac may cost as much as 2-3 rolls of grip tape, but those grip tape rolls are pretty tiny, I go through them very fast, save money in the long run with Tacki-Macs. Also, I simply prefer the feel of the Tacki-Mac sand grip to grip tape.

thats fair, for me i prefer the feel of the LHS grip tape over the rubber grips, and retaping give me more control should i want to change up the grip a bit

I used standard white Renfrew and it seems to last quite a while. I did not regrip at all during the season, but I will probably before my next season starts up in a week. I play at least twice and sometimes three times a week.

I've been tempted to try tacki macs but I am going to stick with what is working for now.

I used tacki mac grip before, but I've switched to tape now. Tacki mac is thicker than regular tape, and I liked that. They didn't wear down the palms at all I would say. When I was out of tacki macs I switched to tape, but i did still tape a thick grip. Now I tape a thinner grip and I'm comfortable with it. It doesn't hurt to try I guess.

I loved Tacki Mac grips in terms of stickiness and not wearing the palms...

This so much.

I've only been playing hockey for a little over 2 years, but the tape I was using on my stick wore through the palm of my glove on the top hand within 4 months. I built myself a hockey driving range, and try and shoot 400 or so pucks a couple times a week, and the tape just ate through that palm.

I put Taki Mac wrap grips on my sticks, and 19 months later, the palms on my gloves still look new, and the grips have been transferred between a couple of sticks.

They're a bit of a pain to get on, and annoying to take off and replace when you decide you want to shorten your stick a bit, but the savings in gloves alone is well worth it.

Its only short coming IMO. It was like trying to put a live dog on a ham slicer.

Yeah, I just used the included tape with mine, and followed the instructions (wet with hot water, then rub with finger), and I've always slipped them on in like 5 seconds.

i'm still developing an opinion on them. my first experience with these was with the ribbed wrapped grip and was very disappointed with how thick the grip was. i immediately ditched it ad was disappointed i wasted 8 bucks.

a few years later, i changed the from using "ribs" in my grips to going non-ribbed and using cohesive gauze tape. absolutely love the stuff, but like ponder says, you have to replace it pretty often which can be a pain.

then i noticed the newer tacki-mac sand grips and was told from a rep directly that this was the thinnest grip in their lineup. picked a 7" up a few weeks ago, and again, like ponder i had to chop down the butt-end a bit as i also prefer it at roughly 1/4".

with my past experience installing bicycle grips using hairspray, it wasn't too difficult to install using the same method. didn't want to use the included tape as i wanted to try to avoid adding any girth to the grip at all costs. still feels a just a touch thicker than i'm used to, but nothing noticeable while playing. not as grippy as the cohesive gauze tape i've grown accustomed to, but again, acceptable.
i think i just need more time to get used to it and all will be fine. looks like it'll be well worth it if it's true that it's easier on the palms and the fact that it'll probably outlast the life of the stick.

i found theres a big dif in doin your butt end with white tape rather than black tape, not as hard on your gloves

I use Tacki Mac, at first the grip does seem too bulky but you get used to it. Tape ruins gloves, Tacki Mac doesnt.

Palms seem to be lasting longer with the Tacki-Mac grip than with the white hockey tape I previously used.

Like the 'Big-butt' ones because of the more built up 'knob' at the end.

Once the included tape didn't stick that well, but haven't had too much trouble putting the grips on. Have reused a couple - ordered a couple extra tapes when I ordered some tacki-macs straight from the manufacturer online (talked them on the phone through their 1-800 number).

Installed my first Tacki Mac (Kane model) the other weekend. I work in the golf industry and it was a lot like putting on a golf grip. I let the grip "sit" a little high so that when I put in the shaft's end cap, it was flush with the end of the grip.

I took it out to stick and puck after letting it dry for 24 hours and it worked really well in my opinion. I'm not much of a hockey player, but I liked it better than tape. I did not notice any major difference in weight the material had a lot of grip to it. I also like the fact that the model I installed has a 1/4" butt end.

Tried the ribbed version, nice feel but too thick, now I'm using the thinner kane edition tacki-mac, and I think they're awesome though i'm known for not too picky about stick grips.

I think tacki mac grips really shine for people who are on a budget or difficult to get their hands on equipments (like me), it saves your gloves palms and saves tapes as well.

I love the tackimac grip.

However, the glue NEVER works for me. It stays slippery and doesn't stick/dry so the grip comes right off. Tried 6 glue strips with 2 different grips. Including new strips from the manufacturer after asking for help.

End up using the brute force approach of sliding it on using a pair of old dull butter knives slid between the shaft and grip to reduce the friction.
