A bit Sad if it just is the European countries which care about international hockey. Canada is hockey crazy they said, hockey is everything in Canada they said...

No matter if not all the best players can attend, it is still national hockey at high level. At least 3 teams was over the cap for NHL-teams and Russia probably too if translated into NHL-cap (perhaps ill composed national teams, but so are some NHL-teams too).

This. The way Canucks "live and breath hockey" is a tad (too) selective way of "living and breathing hockey", sometimes. No offense. It is damn good hockey they play at the WHCs. But some turn up their nose... Snobbery, provincialism, or what?

P.S: I didn't quite get the joke of the last sentence; "---consider us people in glass house"...?! But it sounds quite funny, too bad I have an acute problem in my reading comprehension faculties. :help:

They got the saying in the English language, "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones", meaning that you really shouldn't call people out of antics you yourself are in the worst way guilty of. So on the subject of any potential drunken revelry of the players in the aftermath of a WHC gold, it'd better if our lot directed the discussion to the weathers we have been having lately or something instead.

Well, that was subtle! I let it sink in.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven booed by fans as well as the players:

That is the fate of prime ministers nowadays, at least in Nordic countries, it seems. So do people boo at Finnish prime minister Juha Sipila in public events with big heterogeneous crowds. - O tempores, o mores!

Political leaders, especially divisive ones should know better and stay away at times like this, and certainly not push himself forward with any show-stealing youthful high five nonsense. They should all have taken a page from Salmela playbook and hug him instead. That'll teach him. (I love the Putin appearances in the Russian ones though, and Obama inviting the Cup-winning Blackhawks to the White House, so there's obviously considerations in the rule)

It should be the players' celebration, and of them, and in their terms to an extent. I still think maybe the best part in our 2011 one was that someone in organization was planning on bringing Paradise Oscar to perform his Eurovision song and the team was like "how 'bout no" and then got Vesa-Matti Loiri instead.

Swedish PM has less charisma than a potato. Should stay away from events like this.

Working the wrong shifts so had next to no chance to see any games but grats to Sweden!

Anyone else think it's quite rude/ weird/ disrespectful by all those americants/ canadians to show up these threads touting how they don't care about this tournament? Just don't do that guys, c'mon. A thread dedicated to Sweden's celebration, if you don't have anything nice to say just stay quiet. Besides the minute you come here saying you don't care, you - ironically - at the same time show your bitterness and therefore the fact that you do care.

World Championships mean more in Europe than the SC. You don't see Europeans here saying how we don't care for the SC, right?

Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Oscar, Princess Estelle, Prince Carl Philip, Prince Daniel and King Henrik. :handclap:

I'm Canadian and they play this often on TV, but hardly anyone talks about it. TSN IIRC covered almost every single match on its various channels - even the most random of them among the weaker half of the tournament. Pretty impressive. I never understood the appeal to any Canadian bothering with watching or even paying attention to an all-American Stanley Cup playoffs. If the Sens weren't in it I wouldn't be able to name any of the teams still in the Conference Finals.

Sweden's passion and celebration for the game is truly noteworthy and I wish we had the same level of interest because the games were by no means less entertaining or watchable than the playoffs. Often *more* entertaining.

Well, the last matches are usually by teams well over the cap playing their hearts out in best of one games. It's not an actual World Championship like in soccer but it's a pretty awesome tournament nevertheless - colourful, intense, having great history and traditions and giving a fair chance for the emerging hockey countries to shine. Apart from the name, which is a very minor gripe, I love the World Championships! And congratulations to Sweden - a well deserved win!

I have to say, im surprised with such immense celebration. I though, that in Sweden everybody is accustomed to success. That gold medal from WCH is nothing special anymore.

A gold is a gold... we would not cry ourself to sleep if we dident win it in WCH...

And beside a medal in football is still ranked higher...

Sure. Soccer WC is more prestigious. But actually having to watch that garbage is not everyones cup of tea.

Sweden has always celebrated big whenever they have won. They wanted to have a similar celebration when we won Gold at the Olympics in 2006 but the NHL didn’t allow it due to scheduling (which is understandable and no one complained) but what I meant is that while we celebrate the WHC golds a lot we don’t celebrate anything else any less if we can. Tre Kronor has also been called “The team of the people†(“Folketslagâ€) so it’s nice to have these celebrations.

This was from the WHC gold celebration in 1998…man 19 years ago in the same spot (though it has had a bit of a makeover since then):

And 2013:

There were also huge celebrations when Swedne won bronce at the World Cup od Soccer 1994 and then again when they won gold at the U21 European Championship in 2015.

The bronze is by far the greatest though, but it’s awesome to be able to do this and to celebrate with the players of all sports, I think it also helps make it even more meaningful for them.

Embarrassing, I'm not a social democrat but I find it to be a unrespectful embarrassing behavior. One of the reasons was probably because of first announcing John Klingberg and then suddenly interrupting for Stefan Löfven, weird timing ;-)

Looks I'm the only one here with this opinion though.

Shake a hand sure, but highfive Löfven? Big pass.

Celebrating golds on squares is pretty common in Europe imo.But celebrating gold from U21 football championship with such a crowd is special :) Not sure if people here would come because of this, we never won it though:D
