Brannstrom has been a bit of a polarizing player and maybe this tournament will give folks a good look at him.
I watched him at rookie camp after the draft. He was easily the hardest working guy and I'd go as far as to say that he was more impressive than both Glass and Suzuki at that point.

I also watched Sami Vatanen progress through the years and I'd say the comparable is there but I expect Brannstrom to be better. They're both tenacious young defenders with a drive to attack the net but I think Brannstrom has higher IQ and better awareness defensively and offensively. His head is constantly on a swivel and he fights every shift. I don't know how much his size will hinder him in the big show but he certainly has the qualities needed to succeed in this game. To what extent, I'm not sure but I'd put a bet that Brannstrom will be a top 4 defender for Vegas (or hopefully not, but, another team) for many years. Vegas is lucky he was available IMO.

Pretty surprised Högberg starts the tournament as the #7...

has been top 4 through summer series, pre-tourney games etc.

And had forced his way into the top-4 on the best team in the SHL before leaving for the WJC. And has right around 57% Corsi on the season in the SHL.

Even taking Orange tinted glasses off it would seem objectively he is at worst Swedens 4th best Dman right now ability wise.

id say at worst the 5th. toss up between him and Moverare, who the coaching staff obviously likes more

many experts had him as a late 1st, and Vegas took him ahead of guys like Valimaki and Liljegren who were expected to be higher picks. Looks like he is playing with a chip on his shoulder. Should be interesting to see who ends up the 2nd best dman after Dahlin

Agree, some weird stuff going on for sure. Moverare will likely cost us an important goal or two against the better countries, his skating is just terrible. Lindström getting the POG award after this first game baffles me.
What game did they even watch? Yeah Högberg should get Moverares minutes.

A loss against the Czechs would almost certainly give them the group win. It would also give us a nightmare opponent in the quarterfinal. Huge game tomorrow.

Similar situation for both teams. Nobody wants to play Canada, USA nor Finland obviously. But I think USA and Canada are one more little step above Finland. Especially the U.S. team looks terrific this year, watched their game against Denmark and they looked unstoppable. Of course, Denmark totally messed up the opening period, but anyway.

I also feel Hogberg should get some of Moverare's minutes.

Liljegren had a difficult time babysitting Moverare last night. The combination is especially puzzling considering the Hogberg-Liljegren pairing has played quite well on multiple occasions this year.

Moverare was better than Liljegren.
Yeah but he wasn't babysitting himself either way you shouldn't ha e to play a defenseman the has to be babysat with this group. Just play Högberg and be done with it.

I am incredibly impressed by the work ethic of this swedish team. They're really out there hustling, giving it their all for each other. Love seeing that. Just hope they don't burn themselves out in the groupstages.

This team has a clear identity and I think that's part of the reason Elvenes got cut, he just didn't fit into the identity of this team. Montén probably wanted a hard-working team with players he can trust in every situation out there.

Also have to say I'm impressed by Jonsson Fjällby in particular, didn't know a whole lot about him going into this tournament. Oskar Steen has been good too.

The defense looks pretty solid too and are better in their own zone than I would've expected so far. But the big tests still await. Curious to see how this swedish team as a whole matches up against USA and Canada.
