Suspension for Marchment contact with Referee?

I don't think he was trying to hurt him but you also can't go light on it and make people think it's okay to put your hands/stick on the ref in any capacity other than to give them a firm handshake

Think if the Ref himself had called a penalty they probably wouldn't have done anything, but being he didn't I think there may be something. I don't think the NHL will want to let that be a thing.

I see it the other way around. If the ref didn’t react, it strongly suggests we’re missing some context here.

Maybe he was like “attaway stripes, keep up the good work!” *appreciative stick tap*

This isn't as bad as past touching the refs incidents. Maybe they give him a game or two but it definitely won't be anything crazy

I don't think he'll get anything actually. I'm not aware of any precedent for giving a player who does something like this only a game or two, but I could just be not remembering. If the referee thought anything of the stick tap he would have given Marchment a game misconduct for abuse of officials, which I believe carries an automatic 10-game suspension.

I'm going off how they normally handle questionable things that don't get called in the course of the game. Like if you board a guy, catch them high, etc. and get tossed early they let it go, if not then you normally catch a 1 game suspension.

And there is no way he thought that was an appreciative stick tap considering what was being yelled at him.

I don't think you can do that, it would be a bad precedent if its only a fine.

There’s nothing there. Not that this guy missing a game or two makes a difference in this series anyway.
Players aren’t paid during the playoffs, so a fine is likely the punishment.

MacKinnon got away with slashing a ref after losing a faceoff years back. Slashing refs is okay! Just don’t crosscheck them in the back
