i'm thinking of getting some. nothing necessarily wrong with my current setup, but i thought it'd be kinda cool to go old school and wear some suspenders. and who knows... there also may be some practical benefit, too.

so throwing it out there... who uses them? why? how do they help? how do they hurt?

reI use them for a few reasons:

I'm really thin, so without them I have to tighten my hockey pants quite a bit. I'm also disproportionately tall and the pants I have are probably a bit short for me (because I needed to get some that sort of fit my waist size).

Wearing suspenders allows me to wear my pants a bit looser. That means they kind of hang off the suspenders and wear a bit lower, which compensates for the length issues and negates the need to overtighten them.

I lost some weight and my pants kept slipping lower and lower. Bought suspenders since the pants were still in fine shape and I actually love em now. Just like the guy above, I now keep them a little looser which I feel is less restraining. And I like the look.

One tip I picked up after having the suspenders slip off my shoulders was to put them on over my shoulder pads. keeps everything in place.

I wear suspenders for 2 reasons:
1) keeps my jersey from tucking into the back of my pants.
2) I wear them over my shoulder pads and it helps keep them from riding up into my neck.

Don't like them, but when I play goal I don't have much choice. To echo the above, definitely wear them over your pads to avoid slipping, it was happening constantly with my goalie chest protector. Never tried them out, but never had the need to.

Hey, care to elaborate the cons for you? Did it actually hurt your performance as a skater? Just an extra unnecessary step in suiting up for a game? Look like a dork? :D

I like the jersey not tucking in the pants thing.

Same for me. I dropped about 35 lbs, and I like my pants and didn't want to replace them. So I bought a pair of Easton suspenders, and they work fine. I like that I don't have to cinch my pants up too tight.

bit the bullet. played my first game with them recently. i like 'em. noticed the jersey not tucking in and it's nice not having to tighten so much around the waist. my pants are on the slightly bigger end anyways. as suggested, put 'em over my shoulder pads (slid the suspenders under a convenient pad/flap-thing). i was kinda rushed in dressing this particular game, so when i got out there, the pants were riding up a bit... loosened them between shifts but didn't have time to thoroughly correct this.

Well I don't wear them while playing as a skater, just in goal because the pants are worn fairly loose in that position. If they slide off or catch on something while playing, it's really hard to fix that without taking the jersey off, and if you've ever seen a goalie chest protector, you know those things add a whole lot of extra bulk that make it even harder. It's rare, but every now and then when I do something really acrobatic, one suspender will slip down to my arm and then I have to take a time out to get it back on, or just play with it riding down my arm for the rest of the game.

Probably wouldn't be as big an issue as a player, as you play in short shifts, but for me, it's annoying to have to stop the game to fix myself up! I do have an area on the shoulders that mostly keep them in place, around the shoulder pad portion. That would probably keep them fairly secure on a player shoulder protector too.
