If there is one team that could turn Marner into a playoff performer, it's Vegas and Cassidy's system.

I still don't know how Vegas can afford his hit. He's making over 10 and they have basically pennies to spend on 5 or 6 roster spots. Trading their best deal (LT at 766K) is gonna cost em even more because any other backup they get is gonna be more expensive. Hell, just re-signing Patera would cost em the same.

As leaf fan just getting a defenseman like Theodore be worth it. Just make it Theodore+ Mantha (being salary dump) + Hague for Marner+ Robertson + Timmins. Get 3rd team to eat about half of Marner contract(5 million) for leafs 23rd overall pick(Utah sends 65th overall). Ant Man becomes 2nd line rw he would put up 25+ goals if healthy maybe 30. If not leafs just trade him to gain something back.

Funnily enough, that's a trade proposal that was suggested on the Steve Dongle podcast a few week back. Then it wasn't based on anything, just a trade proposal made because, obviously Vegas is in on every trade rumour.

This is really bad. Marners actual cash is nothing after July 1st there is no way they would ever send their 1st to retain for Vegas

Marner + 1st + Robertson for Theodore, cap dump and depth defenseman woof. Theodore is not Makar, he’s not even a top pair guy at this point.

If this is true, then who is traded out of Vegas?

I mean, Pietrangelo going the other way would make sense in this case as Toronto needs defense and would make it easier for cap space to get cleared.

Or they could do 1st 2024, Nicolas Roy, Brendan Brisson and Nicolas Hague.

Not enough cap going out. Any deal Theodore would be the main piece going out. Still maintain Marner is a terrible idea altogether.

This would be awful for both teams.

Still don’t like the idea of trading Marner. Guy is going to turn into a playoff stud starting next year.

No doubt.
I mean. I'm one of them. No doubt he's talented but the offset of the benefit they get from acquiring him versus what the team would have to give up, I think at best is a wash. But realistically, it weakens the team's blueline and already depleted stock of future assets which will just make it that much harder to rebuild/retool. McCrimmon aggroed the trade and free agency market all the way to a cup but now the window is pretty much closed and he's still going.

Here’s the big reason why it will likely be Vegas… The biggest thing that would be holding back a move to Vegas btw, wouldn’t be Marner, but the main Dman coming back to Toronto.

Why Vegas isn’t scared of taking Marner?

They took Eichel, with the horrible reputation he had, and turned him into a Cup winning 1C who people now view very differently.

So they’ve taken a chance on a star with a bad reputation and it’s worked out. So the entire reputation thing with Marner, won’t effect their decision.

They also have the package the Leafs would want. Theodore (most likely) would be the dman coming…. big name wise. The other parts would be moving pieces. Maybe they get a Whitecloud as well, included with Theodore, Thompson, and an extra forward like Howden.

Not sure if there’s anything stopping the deal from being made prior to July 1 or not. The only real concern would be, will Theodore sign the big extension in Toronto? He’s not exactly a player who enjoys the spotlight. Toronto isn’t exactly his cup of tea, but sometimes those are better fits than people think.

If there were odds, Vegas has to be the leader. Many already think it’s a done deal if the Theodore contract can be worked out.

If it can’t, there’s thoughts maybe the Leafs would pivot to having Pietrangelo in the deal, even at his age, and maybe Hague gets included as well. Then there would be convincing Pietrangelo to waive for Toronto. Would he?

So the thing holding back any deal with Vegas, would likely be more from the Vegas side of things. First, would Theodore sign an extension with the Leafs, or secondly, would Pietrangelo waive his trade protection?

Vegas would obviously rather send Pietrangelo than Theodore, because of age, but there’s positives either way. So Vegas would likely do either, and the Leafs likely would as well. As long as they got Hague included, if it’s Pietrangelo instead of Theodore.

It won’t be Hanifin.

Wouldn't Aiden Hill make more sense to move in this deal (UFA after this year too)? Thompson played more than him last year anyways. Seems to be the future no?

The trick is that you always go and listen to the exact quote when someone posts a second hand source, or you take it with a grain of salt. Sounds like Friedman got "radioed" in the OP.

With that said, Marner to Vegas makes too much sense. They have pieces to make a hockey trade, mainly the fact that they have two decent goalies.

They could do something like a base of William Karlsson+Adin Hill for Mitch Marner. That gives Toronto their goalie, and a forward to cycle into the top 6 with Marner cycling out. Whether they add any futures or not would depend on what the market is like for Marner as a pending UFA with a NMC.

If there is anyone on Vegas that should be 100% without a doubt absolutely untouchable it should William Karlsson.

This is actually the right time to trade him. He’s 31 coming off a near career season making 5.6 centering the third line. Some team will value him as a 2C and trade accordingly.
