I can't complete a proper 'mohawk' turn because I don't have adequate stretching ability in my legs/hips. Can anyone recommend a stretching routine that will help here?
The big thing for me was working with some figure skating teachers, and then going out to an open session wearing some of my pads, and doing nothing but mohawks for the entire time. I still fall in game sessions trying to go left, but going right is finally getting where I want it to be.
But stretch, stretch stretch, anything and everything. Butterfly's really help. I even got to the point where I would sleep on my back with my knees bent a little and gravity pulling them outward in somewhat of a stretched and open position. The more your knees are bent, the greater the stretch.
The other thing that helped was visualizing what my legs needed to do. As your knees are bent, I actually thought of my leg swinging open like a door. I was more worried about getting my blade to the right angle and wasn't doing it right. Thinking more about putting my knee in the right place (and letting the skate follow) seemed to help me.
