Assuming McIlrath has developed nicely in the AHL, gotten a boatload of minutes, and is ready for the 2014-2015 season, is Stralman the odd man out when he's a UFA? I really became a fan of Stralman during last year's playoffs and would rather not see him go (the Rangers being short on RHD also doesn't help). But who else would go? Your thoughts?

Depends how Del Zotto and Moore perform this upcoming season. I'd keep Stralman, for reasons above, and as we could get good value in a trade for one of the former. Don't want to see Stralman go at the deadline and win a Cup with another team, or seem him leave for nothing. Girardi-Stralman-McIlrath is one tough Right Side. Also depends on Staal/Girardi's futures here. Assuming we resign them:

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Stralman
Del Zotto/Moore-McIlrath

Odd man out for a Winger.

Stralman is awesome and completely underappreciated around here. honestly i would rather trade Girardi. G has a lot more value and will probably be looking for a significant raise.

Staal-DZ
McD-Stralman/McI
Moore-Stralman/Mci

still one of the best defenses in the league and having stralsy with a small raise and a cheap McIlrath leaves more room for resigning DZ, Hank and Stepan. Girardi G is also a few years older and probably will begin breaking down in the next few years because of the style he plays.

Eventually someone will likely say something along the lines of "How the hell did he not m-" (finish this sentence and win a cookie)

Anyway if he continues to play like he has he'll be kept. He's had bouts of offense back with Columbus and even with us. it's a shame we haven't found a way to get that out of him yet more consistently but I suspect we've gotten much more actual defense from him than clb dreamed of.

How much does Stralman make again?

My money is on one of Girardi/Del Zotto to be the odd man out.

Strålman is an extremely underrated player right now, but we'll see how that is at the end of the year when a new contract is due.

I'm not sure he is a better D-man than Girardi, but he is definitely a more versatile one. Girardi is a great complimentary D-man who has played excellently with Tyutin, Staal, and McDonagh. Give him a less reliable partner however and the result is a total trainwreck - see the Del Zotto-Girardi pairing.

Strålman is less dependent on his partner, and performed extremely well with every defenceman he played with in 2012-13.

I'm not sure if Strålman could handle Girardi's first pairing minutes as well as G - probably not. But in a salary cap world, Strålman at $2.5M is more valuable than Girardi at $5.5M.

However due to MDZ's inability to play the right side effectively, he is still my first choice of D-man to move.

How the hell did he not make the Devils?

well when you take salary into account i think stralman > Girardi. MDZ looked very good playing with Staal and i really think he could become one of the leagues better offensive dmen.

honestly i believe that Girardi is a product of playing with an elite defensive partner and a system that revolved around shot blocking.

How the hell did he not make the Devils?

cause he isnt 30+ and a former Devil... how did the Jackets let him go?? only to have sign James "shows Avery how to" Wisniewski who has been hurt a lot since he signed with the Jackets.

I certainly hope we hang on to him. Guy made phenomenal strides the last two seasons and was a beast during both playoff runs. Money will be an issue. Cap rising will help, but others needing new deals will be priorities before him. Might turn into a Prust situation where he will get much more lucrative offers elsewhere.

Hes been very solid but loses value if he makes more money.

He is such a good piece because he is very good at 1.5 mill or whatever he makes. Under 2 million.

Depends if there will be an expansion team in the next year or two. If so I'd assume he'd be at risk to be selected...obviously we aren't going to protect him. But who knows what will happen...if one of our top 4 is dealt for help on offense then all the sudden we need Stralman a lot more. No way to predict the future.

As long as he's not looking for stupid money, he's more than welcome here on the 3rd pairing.

As a RS defenceman, that can move and more tha puck, he's going to price himself off the team.

A good problem to have for a season that'd for sure.

I think alot depends on how well Staal plays this season. If Staal struggles he could be the odd man out.

If Stralman rediscovers his offensive game while playing great defense still he'll probably price himself off this team unfortunately. Depending on how they play this season I just might be okay with keeping Stralman and letting G go, teams will throw absolutely stupid money at him if he makes it to UFA, while Stralman is more of a well kept secret. I get the feeling that he definitely enjoys being here however, and us giving him a chance when most other teams didn't definitely would help our case, but it all rests on what actually happens this season.

Girardi or Del Zotto should be the odd man out. Stralman can give us the same service they do (considering that McDongah and Staal are ahead of them) for a fraction of the cost. We don't need all these top 2 D-men.

I'm not saying Stralman is necessarily better than Girardi, but with McDonagh and a healthy Staal anchoring the staff I think he can take Girardi's minutes at a lower cost.

There's also the Staal to Carolina possibility, which whether we want to admit it or not, is a possibility. Then Stralman could really come in handy.

For now he is the 2nd of only two right handed D the team has, if he is willing to sign for something sane they should keep him. Not like they've had any real success replacing Sauer. Finding a decent to good right handed D is pretty difficult in this league.

What bugs me the most is how good Strawlman looks in the playoffs, and how inconsistent he is during the season. There are shifts where he looks like a solid top 4 D-man, and then there's a lot of shifts where he makes you scratch your head and say "This is why Torts can't use more than 4 guys on defense." The Stralman we saw in the playoffs, I wan't that guy all year. If he can play like that, he'll quickly be loved by NYR fans. Although he's price is going to go up big time.

For the extra 2.5 million, I'd rather have Girardi. Stralman can't come close to handling the services Girardi does. I don't agree that he's been sheltered with great D-parings. He's been here longer than all of them. It's not like continued to put him with veteran on D. When the extra 2.5 is no longer an issue to sign our main players, Girardi is definitely more valuable to the Rangers at 5+ million than Stralman at 2.5

the extra 2.5 is an issue though. that money could be the difference between stepan or hank resigning. girardi is also a complete disaster when he us away from an elite defensive partner.

Stralman's own play a UFA status, a Rangers salary cap, as well as their need to resign other priorities in Girardi, MDZ, etc. will see him move on from the Rangers. This guy is a solid blueliner and someone will surely offer him more money then the Rangers can. McIlrath's play, doesn't need to be part of the discussion.

im a big anton fan.

strals is a terrific 2 way defender who skates pretty well and has offensive upside. hes a bargain right now and at 27, hes playing for his next payday. i expect a big season from anton this year.

and i still say hes the guy i want on pp point. he just needs to be told to shoot the puck more. anton got some quality pp point time when he was with columbus few years back and had some decent numbers there. and arneil was on that staff back then as well. i expect av to give him a long looksee there.

bottom line, strals skates better and make better decisions with the pill on his stick than does the fumbling del zotto. and defensively hes less risk and more steady.

were mcilrath ready to play 3rd pair minutes this season, its mike del zotto thats packin his bags and stralman thats staying put imo.
