I'm aware of the thread. Nobody was asking for McCann + 1st for Saad. At best, that is a gross mischaracterization.
Dec. 16, 2024. @StlBigFly was asking for a 1st and McMann -- not McCann --- for Saad at 50% and Toropchenko.

Good thing you're aware of the thread: you suggested taking out Toropchenko and changing the 1st to a 2nd because Toronto doesn't have a 1st anyway.

Saad for a second?

You can't tell McCann from McMann?

Somewhere in between. Team playing bad and he has limited icetime, sometimes with sketchy line mates, but sometimes with good ones. His deadline aav is so low and more so if stl would retain. I’d think he’d be an okay late minute deadline day addition if a team had the space to add him to the bottom of the group. Not somebody you’d put in your top units or if you are that’s crazy don’t do that, but of the small cap hit guys, maybe with a full roster he’s a healthy scratch, he’s probably got the most upside with minimal liability, a guy you’d love if injuries hit. Not terrible playoff insurance especially if the team has a weakness in winger depth.
Saad must have fell off fast. He scored 26 goals last year

I think we’ll see one of Chicago, Columbus, Anahiem, or Calgary make the claim and if Saad is able to contribute he would be a potential flip at the deadline, if not, he provides flexibility. It’s kind of a win win for a cap floor claim team:

Saad should be valuable to these floor teams because his aav is higher than the cash he is owed, he isn’t some walking medical emergency, his term reduces the level of commitment, and there’s a real chance a team can make a 4th round pick, higher with retention, appear out of thin air in just 3 weeks if Saad comes, puts in some goals, and convinces a contender to add him to the group.

This claim and flip scenario should actually net the claiming team a return, albeit small, although it has to be something because as the next sentence shows, there is value in a team holding him. If he is unable to convince a contender he’s valuable then his 2025/26 cap hit will be used by one of the above teams to give them flexibility - maybe it’s easier to work a Provorov deal, a Gibson deal, or whatever, if you have Saad’s future cap hit to protect against the floor. Maybe a team like Columbus won’t let it’s fate be decided by what ufas are left over after they’re picked through.

The reason this market is not visible is no trade clause. In a scenario where there was no trade protection I predict these floor teams would have entered a mini bidding war for Saad just as they did for Trouba. Since Saad was able to reject all of these teams previously the deal couldn’t be made.

Apologies for asking such an obvious question, but I've never paid attention -- for any waived player, if he's claimed at any point, do we hear about it immediately, or only after the 24 hour period has elapsed?

His shooting % has also been awful this season. In his 4 years in STL, he has never shot below 15% except for this season. Currently 9.3%. But that could also just be because he's getting less high danger scoring chances with his current linemates.

He also has the worst +/- on the team.

Either way, he's just not producing enough to justify a roster spot when compared to the rest of the team and his cap hit.
