Contract Termination: [STL] F Brandon Saad on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination

That's news to Blues fans.

I like Saad and wish him the best but I'm just wondering how he's going to contribute to a contender when he could barely crack our lineup this year. If he goes to the Oilers it would be quite funny for them to have two Blues rejects in their lineup.
That's Bowman's plan to get back at the Blues for the offer sheets. Help out their cap situation by collecting all the castoffs.

Because Janmark is exactly the player we need aside from being a right shot. Hence them trying him at 4C in practice. Saad is better than Philp. That’s what matters
Janmark not getting Knob approval as a C is a big reason why Philp was called up. He is also not big.
Going from Ryan to Janmark was a downgrade at #4C

Saad may be better than Arvidsson and Kapanen as well as Perry , Brown and Janmark. He just isn't a true need.

Maybe adding him let's us move Nuge down to 3C and Henrique to 4C.

For sure, we all want our teams to win every trade and from time to time we all overvalue (or undervalue) certain players.

Once in a while, though, we can look back and laugh about what we thought then :)

That proposal I made is a dumpster fire.

I didn’t think the dude was so far gone. In my defense - Saad had a hat trick the week prior, but still, I regret this one lol. A lot of my terrible trade guesses died when armchair gm went offline and now I’m making a new pile of mostly awful guesses.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Toronto is the one that grabs him tho. I like the “why” part of my fail guess; a bit of really cap cheap winger insurance for playoffs. Obviously not worth assets but if acquired free at league minimum…I’m sure if Toronto gets him, or if they stay away, they’ve gotten amazing advice: Berube would know.

It would be even more funny if the Blues weren't a terrible team this season, and the Oilers weren't one of the top teams.

He might be able to reset and look good down the stretch with a bit of rest and motivation, being that he is in mid-season game shape, but he'd have gotten that rest with the 4 nations tourney anyway.

Someone will sign him on a league min deal for sure.

Janmark is a better wing than C though. If we send Philp down, and I do think that's possible, we still need to find another C and we still need to send someone down when that happens. Is Saad worth waiving Kapanen or Perry? I'm not so sure.

Perception is 90% of reality.

It could easily have gone another way. (Had Armstrong felt differently, you might have been a lot warmer with your assessment. )

Two Oilers rejects have contributed greatly to the Blues in a solid 25th spot in the league.

Kapanen has been a decent fit but I would not lose sleep over him going on waivers. I think Philp would be sent down first though and we'd try something like:

Saad-McDavid-Hyman
Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Skinner-RNH-Perry/Kapanen
Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Perry/Kapanen

Leaving a roster spot to accrue cap. Perry will probably see some load management as the season progresses, plus we're sure to have an injury or two at some point.

I think we hold onto Kapanen and keep Kane on LTIR the entire year. Nice lineup.

Except unlike Kapanen and Saad, you could actually use both of those guys in your lineup.

Saad on the first line? Good luck with that.

Kap's been decent as a middle six winger who can also PK. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

The guy's averaged 20 goals a career essentially his entire time in the show. He'd be one of the better support wingers we've tried with McDavid/Draisaitl. Again, not the gotcha you think it is, maybe worry more about your own club making the playoffs.

He'll probably make a decent chunk of that back by signing with a new team
I think he's probably looking at about half of what he was still owed this year and unless he signs with a contender and absolutely goes off in the playoffs probably looking at about half of what he was owed next year too

I don't mind that lineup, aside from the fact that it feels like we are wasting Henrique on the 4th line, but it is a solid lineup. I don't think Skinner gets back in without more injury issues. I think they hold him out and he eventually accepts a trade.

Kapanen has been fine here in a depth role. Saad would really only be useful in the top six, in my opinion. He has been a decent addition to scoring lines in the past. I'm not even sure if I want to give him a chance, but if we do, its probably a good bet that he sees time with McDavid, just to see if there is any chemistry there.

So he can sign with a contender for min, or sign with a lower team where he will have plenty of playing time to show he still has it and then that team trades him to a contender half retained.

Throwing away $4m+ for "a chance" to be back in the NHL at age 32 is certainly a big gamble. Of course, it's a lot more defensible when the guy has $45m worth of career earnings vs. Zadina who did it with far less.

Obviously, there are a whole whack of contending teams that would happily pick him up at league-minimum to $1m for the balance of the year.

Part of me wonders, if he might take an alternate approach of going somewhere like Chicago, Anaheim, SJ; on a 1-year deal at something like $3m, in hopes of building up some vale, and then getting retained 50% at the deadline to a contender.

He's just like Saad(same point totals with one extra goal for Skinner). Knoblauch just will not cut Skinner any slack at all. It's actually laughable at this point
Skinner plays East West, and needs puck. Not a fit. Saad could fit better. Maybe they move Skinner to a different contender.

Kapanen has been great so far. Some times different lineups need different things

A fun fact: the Oilers are in St. Louis on Tuesday to play the Blues. That means Saad could debut against his old team and fly with his new team right after to their next game. How convenient is that?
