Contract Termination: [STL] F Brandon Saad on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination

Someone was offering him to the Devils as part of a Nemec deal two weeks ago. Obvious troll but I'd think about signing him on a league minimum year as vet depth. But Devils do need a Center more urgently.

I'll never knock a guy betting on himself but Zadina did this last year and it blew up spectacularly.

He will make up most of the money lost. Might even be able to do it within the same time frame. Smart move imo
He was making 4.5 million next year. There's no way (even if he's good) he'll get close to that. He cost himself millions to stay in the NHL. I respect it but if it was me, call me Mrs. Frizzle because I'm riding the AHL bus.

Nah dude has made like $40 million over his career. He just would rather play in Edmonton's bottom-6 for $1 million over riding busses in the AHL for $5 million.

Sportrac says 57 million in career earnings.

I also think he may be worried that if he gets sent down, he's there for next year too, because no one will want to spend $4.5m in cap space on him. If he signs with a contender for the rest of this season, and does Ok in the playoffs, he could get another 1 year contract, and continue his NHL career. And with the cap going up, maybe there's a little extra in there for a team to help make the floor.

He had a cap hit of $4.5m, but was only due $3.625m.

I also respect your choice, but if I'd already earned $57m, I'm not riding a bus for $3.625m, much of which is going to taxes and my agent. I'd rather spend that time focusing on making the money I already have grow.

The cap is going way up, he has a decade of ~20 goal seasons literally right behind him, he could easily join a contender and post ~ .5pts/game at ES, solid playoff track-record...

He could absolutely sign a multi-year deal with close to that dollar amount being paid out in the first year. It would take a lot going right, but so long as he joins a team with a spot for him, I doubt he will lose out on much money in the first year and a half and even less so over the course of his remaining career.

I respect it. He’ll give up some salary to get a fresh start as depth vet on a minimum contract on a contender. I can’t fault a guy who is willing to lose some money to keep playing and try to win. Assuming that’s the play here.

Assuming he signs for $1M AAV with another team this season, he'd be forfeiting ~$1.275M the rest of this season. He's also walking away from $3.625M next season, though you have to figure he offsets a decent chunk of that with whatever deal he signs for next season - even if it's a slight overpay from a non-contending team looking for a veteran presence that they can flip at the deadline.

So, say he gets $2.5M next season - he'd be walking away from $2.4M total the next season and a half to still play in the NHL and not have to ride buses in the AHL. Not to mention, continuing to play at the NHL level versus the AHL sets him up better for future contracts beyond next season where he could make up even more of that.

I think teams will also like that he's betting on himself right now. He's still just 32 years old, so might have a few more seasons under his belt.
