Well tbf Tampa has been around for what? 30ish years. The comparables like Ducks (one, Getzlaf), Sens (none), Panthers (none) Sharks (one, Couture) but yeah, no star players yet. We'll see with Hedman.

Honestly I think shaving off our already weak depth is the worst move here. We need to trade a bigger name. That way we get real assets back while creating the cap space to keep Stamkos. To me, it's Sergachev who should go, because he's about to make 8.5m playing behind Hedman and McDonagh. And he would return a real asset while giving us the flexibility to keep Stamkos.


When you trade 5 assets for an unproven guy, thus draining everything you have in the cupboard to improve the team in one move, yeah, it's gonna be an issue no matter when it happens. Especially when the guy shows up and looks like a fringe NHL player.

The cupboard was almost gone before the Jeannot trade.

Tampa fans had NO problem trading younger assets and draft picks when they were winning. All of the sudden, the one and done post seasons are causing many to question those moves. Moves that ANY professional organization would have made to win back-to-back Championships I might add.

The reality is, the Salary Cap has finally caught up to the Lightning and much of the fan base refuses to remove their rose-colored glasses to see and understand that.

Anaheim has a boatload of cap space, a roster full of youth, is looking to take the next step and make the playoffs....

No offense, but Anaheim is drafting third overall after finishing the season with 59 points. Vegas was the last wild card in the West with 98 points.

Of course we didn't, because we got a return on the assets rather than Tanner Jeannot. Nobody's saying "Don't trade any assets to win!" We would like to have a couple of assets TO trade, but unfortunately we spent them all on Tanner Jeannot... That trade is a laughing stock for a reason, because it looked crazy, and WAS crazy. It wasn't just "trading young assets to win." It was trading all the assets for a guy who barely belongs in the NHL.

Did the salary cap catch up? Of course. Were there mistakes made that made the decline a lot faster than it had to be? Pretty massive ones.

If Stamkos is asking for less than 5m, JBB needs to be fired. I'm not even a big Stamkos guy, but he's a 40 goal scorer and we have about two years left of the window (if that). Either do a full rebuild, or ice the best possible team. I have no clue how you beat Stamkos at < 5m.
