Leads on the ice by not backing down from the physical side of the game every night, leads off the ice by making himself available and being candid about the team's performances. Seems like a great guy to have, one of the handful who have brought what they have night-to-night including Miller and Kaleta. Love the acquisition.

He's an older, more expensive, less skilled Kassian. Glad they got him, though replacing Kassian with him made no sense. Adding him to a team that had Kassian would have been pretty cool. Imagine the Sabres in a playoff series with Kassian and Foligno in the top 6, Ott and Kaleta in the bottom 6.

If Kassian worked half as hard at being a physical presence as Ott does, he'd be the second coming of Clarke Gillies.

That said, they do need more of the type of game those four guys can bring.

In no way was Ott a replacement for Kassian. Kassian hadn't even made the team yet.

Admittedly, I haven't seen Kassian play this year, but I think Kassian completely lacks Ott's defensive play and faceoff ability, so not sure that's a valid comparison.
edit: and also the logic enrothorne posted above.

Or, more recently, Scott Hartnell.

Indeed, Ott has been one of a small handful of Sabres who have both played hard / given consistent effort, and actually cared / given a crap this season. It's shameful how short that Sabres list is.

I'm disappointed Corey Tropp (@OP: season-ending injury in fall 2012) couldn't be learning from Ott this season. Glad Ott's signed for another season.

I like Ott and what he brings but some part of the fan base sees him as untouchble. I mean he's a good player and you need guys like him who are physical but if the trade made the team better I would deal him.

I've been very impressed with Ott and all that he brings. Based on his rep, I was expecting more of a punk and less of the mature leader he's been.

Love what Ott has brought so far!!

The only thing he hasn't done is be that immature Avery-type pest. He had a little of that in him for most of his career, but for the Sabres he's been a hard nosed, physical, balls to the wall player.

He really looks like a great veteran leader out there, from where I sit. I applaud him for seeming to mature into this player full time.

Have to love what Ott is bringing to the table for everything Chain and others have mentioned. Then you consider that the Sabres have only allowed 4 goals all season when Ott has been on the ice at even strength in over 270 minutes (less than a goal per 60) and he's doing even better than the Sabres could have hoped in my opinion.

Love his game...tough, physical player that can put up some points...one of our better guys on faceoffs which we are lacking big time on our team....seems very professional and a hard worker...I always like the hear what he says in interviews....A true leader that definitely deserves an "A"....Would love for the Sabres to sign him to an extension....This is the kind of guy I want on my team come playoff time.

He's played well. He's a rugged, blue collar leader.

Some may argue that his in-room leadership presence is as valuable as Roy's would-be on-ice presence. Others may not.

It's a shame Buffalo seems to pick up physical players later in their career, though. Regehr, Rivet and Ott were all over 30 when they found their way to Buffalo. It'd be nice if the Sabres could draft and develop some of these players on their own accord.

Foligno, Tropp, McNabb, Girgensons, Catenacci... We've got some young, gritty guys in the pipeline.

Cat is not appropriate on this list IMO

Ott has been a nice addition. Hits everything he comes across, leads by example, tends to make smart decisions with the puck, and you never question his work ethic or effort.

If I had to nitpick, I'd tell him to stop Derek Roy'ing every penalty that gets called against him, and just stay quiet and skate to the box in certain instances. But he has been a bright spot on a team of fecal matter.

Kassian wasn't established as anything here, the Sabres didn't need to replace him and didn't.

Marcus Foligno is their young powerforward, and as much as he's struggling I think there's enough drive in that kid that I'm almost positive he'll prove to be a solid player in this league.

Kassian has skills, it's the other stuff I was never sure about.
