Proposal: Stars-Sharks

Sharks should be allowed to dump one or two prospects on entry level contracts that ended up being bad and ECHL only players back to Dallas due to the 50 contract limit, IF the Sharks have any contracts like that.

Otherwise, seems reasonable to me.

Sharks: Mason Marchment, Matt Dumba

Stars: 8.25m cap space

Grier improves his roster with Marchment and doesn’t have to spend assets for taking Dumba as a cap dump.
I feel like the Stars could definitely do better than just giving Marchment away like this.

$53m in cap space. Goddamn.
It helps that Vlasic’s 7M comes off the books after this next season and they can still LTIR Couture for an extra 8M if needed. Ironically they’ll probably need his cap hit just to reach the floor next season. Grier has a lot to work with though

Cap space is really really tight in Dallas right now, with lots of forward spots unfilled, and they're paying Dumba $3.75m to be their #8 defenseman. They could sign a middle 6 winger (which they really need) with that money instead. They also don't want to waste a draft pick dumping Dumba or waste cap space buying him out.

The OP offer is basically, from the Dallas GM perspective :

Marchment
Dumba (negative value contract)

for

top 9 forward ( sign a UFA )
top 9 forward ( sign a UFA )
possibly a tiny bit of cap left over

Still think the stars get some picks for this type of deal. Marchment has value obviously and while Dumba is a negative contract he’s still a right handed dman with not a lot of options in free agency a team might be willing to go with him since it’s only one year on his deal.

I’d definitely send back Tampa’s third, but wouldn’t surprise me if they were able to grab Ott’s 2nd in such a deal.

If we could get em for free, even better.

Im pretty confident some team would take Dumba for future considerations, planning to flip him at the deadline at 50% for a pick. He still an NHL caliber(#6/7) RHD, on an expiring contract.

yeah you could probably get a 2nd for Marchment and it'd probably take a 2nd to get rid of Dumba (what a colossal mistake signing)

for some reason i thought Dumba has another year on his deal. The stars should be able to get a little better than this considering the commitment to Dumba is only one year but they desperately need to shed that contract.

Sharks would take this and run. They'd probably even through a Boudreau or Gushkin the other way to complete it as they have some talent but it's obvious they aren't in the sharks long term plans.
