You make a convincing argument.Chabot is perhaps more injury prone and still trying to figure out how to be a top pair defenseman at 27.
Karlsson is 33 and just put up a Hart level performance and has proven he can play big minutes and succeed in the playoffs.
Chabot is a way bigger and riskier question mark for the next 3-4 years. Years we could be competing not for a playoff spot but for a cup.
Would you say no to Chara at 33, Crosby at 33, Alfredsson at 33,Lidstrom at 33, Sakic or Yzerman at 33 for the likes of Chabot when you're trying to win? Karlsson is on their level.
And we agree that we need a nice mix of quality veterans on offense and defense like the Hawks, Kings and Pens.
Giroux and Karlsson, two hyper competitive and veteran legends on offense and defense leading Brady, Stutzle, Sanderson, Batherson, Norris, Chychrun, Zub, Greig, Kleven etc
That's way closer to the Pens, Hawks and kings blueprint than hoping Chabot finally figures out how to play more than 23 effective minutes or finally having an elite season at the age of 27.
Not to mention fixing the obvious flaw of having like 5 LHD and 1 RD.
We have our Kane, Toews, Kopitar, Doughty, Keith Sharp, Brown, Hossa etc We could and should be competing for a cup now.
But people seem content to just "develop" and hope for a playoff spot for the next three years.
One thing is missing. Pittsburgh had Fleury then Murray to dominate in the playoffs. LA had Quick who was amongst the best goalies for the majority of his career. The Blackhawks had Crawford who was a pretty dependable goalie who could play lights out and steal a game.
We don't have a goalie.
Chabot is still an impressive defenceman. He was the MVP of the world Juniors. He has eaten huge minutes with a supporting cast in shambles for years. He seems to be a very mature young man. I think it is more likely that Chabot will get better as he gets older (at least for a couple of years). He can play less minutes and feel supported by a cast of above average defenders. The stress taken off of his mind to not be the number 1 and only option might help him with injury issues.
I see a lot for this team aswell. I just think that Chabot will have a big part to play in those potential future playoff runs.
