So far, the NHL has announced (ok, this link is through NBC) that the Stanley Cup Final starts on June 3rd.

That sounds like it is too late of a start date, IF both of the conference finals end soonish, in five total games each or so.

Is the Finals schedule always set in stone or will they possibly move them around a bit? How has it been in the past with quick playoffs round 3s?

A hiatus of one week is perhaps excessive (the NFL two weeks yeah yeah..). To me (and I would guess for the average viewer) 3-5 days of non-game days would feel optimal in between the last conference final and the Stanley Cup Final game 1.

There was a 4-5 day break from the 2nd round to the 3rd, and I thought that was too much.

If both semifinal series continue as they have been, they'll close out by Thursday night.

May 24th.

Seems like it'd be a VERY large gap if the NHL sticks to a June 3rd start date, so hopefully the Canes and Stars can start throwing some wins on the board soon.

Good, give the teams proper time to rest and get healthy to ensure good quality of play in the finals.

The last time that both Conference Finals wrapped up early was in 2013 (Boston sweep, Chicago advanced in 5) and the league pushed up the start of the SCF. Original schedule: Conference Finals begin Saturday

June 7: Penguins/Bruins Game 4
June 8: Kings/Blackhawks Game 5

June 9: Penguins/Bruins Game 5
June 10: Kings/Blackhawks Game 6
June 11: Penguins/Bruins Game 6
June 12: Kings/Blackhawks Game 7, Penguins/Bruins Game 7

Revised SCF schedule:
June 12: Blachawks/Bruins Game 1

That's the absolute latest Start based on both series going 7 games.
They will adjust up when both end earlier

It is usually set in stone, but there is usually a move up scenario if both CF end in 5 games or less. But otherwise it is a June 3 start.

But the playoffs are a marathon- so everyone says. Ain't no time for rest or recovery- this is a battle of wills, of overcoming the exhaustion to....Yada Yada yada

Well if Celtics win Game 5 on Wednesday, I’m gonna guess the move up date will be Wednesday May 31. If not, I could see it being Tuesday May 30.

No? It was 2 days?

But I do actually agree, 2-3 days is plenty of time between rounds. Give each team a couple days to rest and heal up and get prepared for the finals, and give the media some time to hype up whatever storylines they want.

I think it would be a bit of a disaster actually for them to potentially have the conference finals finished by Thursday night the 25th, and then go 8 days before Game 1 of the finals. At that point over a full week without hockey I know personally I will be fully tuned out on playoffs and into offseason/draft mode.

No thanks, we'll take the long rest.

Barkov might benefit, did you consider that?

Also, the Panthers seem like a team least in need of rest. They are the most dynamic team, and would benefit the most, if every team is playing a lot.

Not to mention that casuals would be turned into full summer mode.

I think both leagues made agreements with their network partners to start in June. The NBA chose their days and the NHL schedules on their off days.

As I thought:

evidently both Denver and Miami have other events booked so it’s not as simple as them going 6/1-3-5-7-9-11-13 5/31-2-4-6-8-10-12 which means there’s gonna be two days breaks in both series for sure

Both leagues put in two day breaks over travel (and have since the NBA moved to a 2-2-1-1-1 format a few years ago).

The schedule for both leagues Finals are set well in advanced for tv with a move up scenario if both conference finals go 5 games or less. If there are building conflicts the teams are required to but out the other event. There are clauses in all the arena contracts with concerts/events that they are pending playoffs. For example Billy Joel got bumped at the Garden earlier this year because of the Devils/Rangers series and the need to schedule that for the ABC slot.
